The ”Hallkick” Tutorial

The ”hallkick” is one of those powerful, yet easy to accomplish, effects that is frequently used in all genres of EDM. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, take a listen to this hallkick I created in less than two minutes using a kick, crash and lots of reverb!

Sounds pretty sweet huh? Well then, let’s get started!
Start by loading up you favourite drum sampler (I use NI Battery) in your sequencer of choice. Add your kick sample on two channels and add a crash sample on one channel. Now well start working with each separate channel.
Kick channel 1:
Add a reverb, I used reverb A that comes with Steinbergs Cubase. Use these parameters as guidelines:
Dry: 100%
Wet: 50%
Roomsize: 80
Reverb time: 10s
Kick channel 2:
Add an equalizer and filter out all frequencies below 100 – 150 Hz. Add a reverb:
Dry: 100%
Wet: 100%
Roomsize: 100
Reverb time: 10s
Continue by adding a delay and tweak it to your own taste, I usually use it to get that subtle echo effect.
Crash channel:
Depending on your crash sample, you might want to filter out some of the lows with an equalizer. Then add a reverb. Use the same settings you used on reverb at the second kick channel.
Tweak the volume of each channel so when all channels are triggered and played at the same time it sounds good. Route all channels to “group channel” and if you want, compress the sounds togheter. This is great, because you can now control the volumes of all three channels with the “group channel”.
By now this should sound like a regular hallkick, and to make it fit in the mix, control the volume with an automation of the group channels volume level. There’s also another great way to control you hallkick in the mix.
Let’s say you want the reverb of the kicks to fade out but keep the reverb of the crash in the mix. This isn’t very hard to accomplish, simply automate the “reverb time” of each channel instead of automating the group channels volume.
What I usually do, is having the first kick channel to fade out pretty fast and keep the second kick channel and the crash channel for a while longer.
Also, remember to play around with automation for panning, adding effects such as chorus or phasers! There are no rules, just have fun with it!

Thanks guys! =)
Yeah I know, creating a hallkick isn't all that hard, blending it with the mix can be tricky. However I'll try to write a new tutorial later on some other subject. Just don't know what to write about, perhaps I'll do a little tutorial about drumbeats and percussions or something =) |

thx man
i just chopped the kick prt of it, reversed it, put some sat on it and now I'm using it as an uplifter :) |

acutally slight compression on the kick and heavy on the crash can create a crazy effect when couple with panning automation in 8t or 16t mirror automation patterns. i recommend it. i guess and use a mergers one for the kick and one for the crash and then a final to connect the two then youll really layer them together for triggering. then the two compressors will play off eachother instead of just muddy the stuff up. hope my lil creativity blurb is of help. |

write a tutorial about basslines and frequencies and how to fill "the box" meaning the mix so that it's full of even frequencies, start with the low end first.
can never have enough bassline and frequencies tutorials |
