[REVIEW] Massive Attack @ Roseland Ballroom 10/4

well, dunno how many peeps know about this group but ive been a fan for a coupla years and was pretty stoked about seein em for the first time..didnt know what to expect and was really impressed:eyes:..nickodemus opened, who wasnt all that bad, played some good ol skool hiphop mixed with music im not too familiar with (heard lotsa sitar/indian influenced sounds)..massive attack came on right around 9pm, i was in center towards the front, and was surprised to see a pretty large crowd filling up the place
anyway, i thought they rocked it..def refreshing to see electronic music being played and manipulated live..lots of energy and great lighting effects..the guitars sounded great live and the vocalists did well too..had to leave during their break but got to hear a lot of their most well known tracks which was awesome...karmacoma, future proof, angel, teardrop, what your soul sings, and others i cant recall..overall a really fun show, pleasantly surprised..didnt see any of u guys who went, but hope u guys had a good time too |

| We got there right near the end of the opener's set and went up front on the right hand side, near the side stage where PvD played in March. Really good show. Lighting was excellent. Drinks were really strong and cheap ($8 for a jack and coke). |

yea i got a couple of the same, bartender was mixin w/ johnny walker black which was a nice surprise..how was the second half of the show? |

^^^We were wondering where you were. We heard from ism reviews they didn't start until 9:30 the previous night, so we decided to take our time getting there. We didn't really catch any of Nickodemus. His Summerstage description said he played hiphop, jazzy, breaky, and "organic" :conf: haha
Anyway, I was really impressed with the lighting and performance. It was pretty intense. Glad to hear the big tunes you mentioned. They also played Inertia Creeps and Risingson. |

i think the intensity is what surprised me the most considering how mellow their albums can be..i can see why theyve gotten offers to do action movie soundtracks, their guitar riffs sounded like they belonged in some badass fight scenes:stongue: |

Yeah, I expected it to be pretty mellow too. The lighting harmonized very well with the tracks as far as colors and patterns. I remember walking in and thinking it looked like a giant equalizer, and then later they just went nuts with it. Their music evokes a wide range of emotions. Teardrop is breathy and beautiful. Angel is haunting and hypnotic. Back to back they were WOW :eyes: and Inertia Creeps is just sexy as . Even though I didn't get into them until recently, I am a believer now ;) |

first of all-- BOGIEEEE, ALISAAAAAAAA, JOHNNNNNN (ok, that doesn't quite work with a consonant... but anyway.) where the were you guys?!!??!
some of the basslines and percussion just made me go crazy.. cant name any songs but been a fan of massive attack for a while-- i'm just the kind of person that pops on the cd or mp3 album and goes about her business so that's why lol.
oh and what was the (last?) song where the same drum bridge was going on repeatedly, every time faster and faster til i felt like i was at an Iron Maiden show? that was ing cool!!!! :crazy: :tongue2
and of course, i went totally berzerk (sp?) when they played unfinished sympathy... only my favorite song of ALL ING TIME... but yea...
my only slight tiff was that when elizabeth and deborah sang (what voices!!!! i just got the shivers thinking about it.. wow..), their voices should have been amplified more. i thought they were a bit too overpowered by the other instruments/elements.
PS. worth every ing penny. :D |
