One of the greatest things that has come of me buying turntables and dj'ing is that I now have my stepdads old classic rock collection at my disposal. It's like digging through a gold mine. :)
Edit: Nothing beats going through hundreds of records and finding Pink Floyd - Animals. |

Pink Floyd started a bit earlier and were progressive rock, so I can see that. The only thing of theirs that I'm really familiar with is Pictures at an Exhibition, which is just an amazing concept album. The first time I heard it was just :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: |
i dont think piper at the gates of dawn is considered prog rock... |

It's not, it's psychedelic rock. It was their debut album and when Syd Barrett was still a driving force in the band, as he became more separated from the band (fueled by his use of all the psychedelics that helped create their early sound). The others that are more psychedelic are A Saucerful of Secrets and Ummagumma. Atom Heart Mother is probably the most transistional album, where you can notice their sound taking the turn towards prog rock. I think it was the combination of the death of the psychedelic rock scene and the departure of Barrett from the band that led them in the new direction. Yes was another band that started in the psychedelic scene and shifted to prog rock.
A lot of transition seemed to stem from the shift in drugs being used. The hippies of the 60s were into LSD, mushrooms, etc, whereas the 70s brought the coke, speed, and heroin. This is the era when Hunter S. Thompson, one of my favorite writers got really big with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which pretty chronicles this same shift in society and he makes lots of references to music in doing so. If you haven't read the book, you should, it's a classic, or at least watch the movie, which is pretty well done by Terry Gilliam and starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro. They consulted Hunter a lot in the creation and much of the dialogue is directly quoted from the book.
Anyhow, back to Pink Floyd. The albums that followed, which are the ones most people are more familiar with, are the more prog rock ones (Meddle, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall). |
