this pic was taken by the hubble telescope. so you have an idea, most of those things you see in there are galaxies with billions of stars each one. there are more of this at hubble website http://hubblesite.org/

It should be huge. Space is huge.:) Great pic though, makes you feel pretty small don't it? |

DAM STRAIGHT! I love that tune too ... classic .... Stage One!
I am a big space/universe nerd, I love astronomy.
Did you guys know that there are more stars in the observable universe than all grains of sand ALL OVER EARTH COMBINED!
There are 200 BILLION stars in our own Milky Way galaxy alone, which is an average amount. And there are around 100 BILLION galaxies in observable universe, each with at least 100 billion stars. Our galaxy is 100,000 light years long, and a light year is the amount of time it takes for light to travel in one year which is like 7 billion trillion miles. The closest star to Sun is 4 light years away. Yet it will take our FASTEST craft with the latest technology at least 32,000 years to reach it!!!
Oh, and thousands more statistical facts ... :tongue3  |

wow thats pretty wicked:)
kinda freaks me out..we live in just one galaxy..theres one livable planet - earth..but there are soo many more other galaxies! do they have a planet like earth??
aah...space:) |

99.999 % of matter is empty space. And 99% of the universe is empty space. Multiply those factors and you get a really empty universe ...
Oh, the astronomers have found several planetary systems after surveying the nearest 300 or so stars. I think they found 25 planetary systems like ours - one in about every 10 stars. About 1 in 3-4 stars has planets, mainly gas giants, and 1 in 2 of those stars has similary planetary systems like our system!
So at this estimate our galaxy has a possible 20 billion stars with a planetary system like ours. And lets say 1 in 10 of those has life sustaining capability, thats 2 billion. And 1 in ten of those has some sort of life developed, maybe primitive mainly because the planet is located at the right distance from the star, thats 200 million. And then maybe 1 in 100 of those systems has a more advanced life system, thats 2 million ... surely there are other factors too, but imagine the possibilities ... these creatures are probably not advanced enough to travel great distances.
And the ones that do are probably so intelligent they watch us and try not to interfere with our planet ;-) |
