I'll say that the night was just ok. It was def not as good as the last time he was here back in the spring.
His mixing was on point, as is expected. I wasnt a huge fan of his track selection though. He started off around 11:30ish playing a few of his tracks that he plays at every event ( i cant remember the names, i'm horrible ad ID's). But by 12:30, he brought the energy up and was playing some bangin songs. At 1, he went off w/ some deep dark songs w/ kickin bass that got a lot of people stompin. And as quickly as that came on, it went off and he played a of up-lifting trance till close.
I stayed till 1:50, so didnt hear last track or encore, but a pretty big fight broke out on the right side of the stage in front of the bar at like 1:40.
Alex Whalen did a great job opening. The club was crowded but not as bad as i had expected. Avalon hiked up the price at the door to $25, $20 on guest list ( it was supposed to be 15 + 10 respectively - not as bad as when the jacked the price up for tiesto, but still its the principal) and didnt open the doors till almost 11.
Some tracks I remember (please excuse any spelling mistakes):
Oxaia - domino
Racoon - Love you More
Sean Tyas - Lift
he mixed in what sounded like the Blade - Blood rave track into some other song....he let it play for like 30 seconds, so it was a bit of a tease.
Overall, a decent night, but no where as close to being as good as his set at tobbacco wharehouse, or his last few sets in boston. I think he plays better in the spring personally. His sets in boston in the fall have been a bit dissapointingi IMO. i dont know why, but it seems like the whole vibe of the club and the set just arent as good.

Interesting...I've been out of town for a few months now so I haven't been in the scene for a little while, but I'll still throw in my 2 cents about your review. I think Armin usually plays better in Boston. At least that's been my experience. He's usually good for a 2-3 hour set but longer than that he has trouble.
Fights breaking out in Avalon now? No wonder Sasha, John Digweed, Desyn Masiello, and others refuse to play there...too bad cause it's such a great space.
Alex Whalen is a great opener too. Glad to hear he threw down.
As far as Armin playing his better sets in the spring, his October 2003 set was one of the best trance nights i've ever been to, but I agree last spring he was really on too. He played from 11-2 which was really sweet. Sorry to hear he wasn't quite on point last night... |

one of the best armin sets in Boston i would say :) No cheesy music ,except for maybe 1 or 2 tunes. much much better than a&b. Crowd was nice too :)
what do u mean by "tracks that he plays at every event"???? he hasnt been on the east coast since NYC in the summer and his track selection was completely different back then. Only the encore and one other tune i could remember that were the same. |

Set was ok, definitely not as good as the last time he played here. The energy in the room was awesome but the track selection was decent at best.
Tracks of the night for me were:
Alex Morph, Rank 1 - Life less ordinary
Cosmic Gate - Should have Known
Karen Overton - loving arms (Markus Schulz vs Elevation remix)
He opened with Rui da Silva - Touch me, cheesy track but the crowd ate it up.
The fight that broke out was really lame too, first time i've seen that happen at avalon boston. Seems like clubbing every where is going down hill.
Stopped by RISE for Derek Carter after but left an hour in because I cannot stand the Chicago house sound. Hard to go from trance to jazzy house lol.
Looking forward to Ferry though, hopefully he drops that techness sound he did last time he was here. He blew the roof off that night. |

Well, I wasn't here last time Armin was here, but I totally loved last night. Armin banged it out real hard, playing some killer tunes. Great vibe, great set. Highlights...
Oxaia - Domino
2 Divine - Black is the Colour (Coco & Green Remix)
Karen Overton - Your Loving Arms (Markus Schulz vs. Elevation Mix)
Armin van Buuren - Love You More
Great night. :-) |

from where i was standing it was crowded as hell. i was pissed we all had to wait outside until like 11pm then once i finally got inside the doors to the main room were locked for whatever.
anyhow, i've only heard alex whalen like twice and he did a great job for such a short set. armin did an excellent job mixing and i would say 95% of the tracks he played came from an ASOT episode in the past 6 or so weeks, but since i LOVE ASOT i couldn't complain. not to repeat some correct ids here is some of what i remember...
Cassandra Fox - Touch me (Mike Koglin vs Jono Grant remix)
Kyau & Albert - Are you Fine (Markus Schulz remix)
Ronski Speed - The Space we Are (John O Callaghan remix)
overall solid set, but far from the tobacco warehouse experiece because that is untouchable. hoping he'll one up himself tonight though |

Mike Koglin Vs. P.O.S. - Untitled Audio (Nitrous Oxide Remix) - it was really good to hear some polish sound too :) Though his set wasn't 100% what I was expecting after last few ASOTs, for me it was missing some important tracks like Estiva pres. Sunover - Stella - I wanted to hear this one so bad. But anyway this event was one of the best I've seem in Avalon ... music, crowd and atmosphere (except for this fight but security handled it very quick)
Anybody got any pics ? |

Thanks to Everyone who came out on Friday night for Armin. Interesting reading your comments. Here's a couple of our own.
Reason for the delay with doors is due to Concerts. You may have noticed Armin was on stage on Friday, the band had a lot of production and we have to load that out, set up a DJ booth before we can let customers in, that's all.
Alex Whalen is one the most under-rated DJ's in N. America. He always does an amazing job. Check our schedule for his solo appearances and show him some love.
Sasha etc refusing to play here.... simply not true. Digweed was here in March, Sasha will be back when his schedule allows. Avalon Boston still remains one of the more important stops on the East Coast and if you think otherwise just check out who we have coming for New Years Eve.
