Nobody really knows the effect genetically modified foods will have on a person after prolonged consumption.
So sending them to a starving country can be seen as a massive experiment on human subjects who don't really have a choice. |

In regards to the genetically modified foods.
A lot of these food items are new and have had very short testing period times which makes it impossible to say for sure if they are safe for nature and for living creatures.
I think great things could be accomplished with GMOs but I think the release to market is going way too fast.
In times past when new breeds of potatoes and tomatoes were created by cross breeding it took a very long time before they were made "public" and available to consumers.
I have read figures of 10 to 15 years for some tomato strains.
These new breeds permitted stronger strains to exist and also made the items less fragile during transportation etc ( this was one of the major breakthroughs with making tomatoes and various produce available everywhere year round ).
The crossbreeding example may not be fully relevant to this matter because when such practices were taking place the genetic and agricultural technologies knowledge of today were not yet available. Now we can know if things are "wrong" much faster but it's hard to say for sure how stable they will remain over the years.
On a side note many GMOs are taking strong traits from other items for example peanuts used in modifying a tomato strain( I don't know if this specific example has takeen place I am just giving you an idea of some things that take place ). With such modifications you are risking untold things, food allergies being just the tip of the iceberg.
Lastly a major complaint you will be hearing from people about the sale of seeds to Africa and other less wealthy nations and continents is that many of the GMO seed strains that are being sold are not self reproducing.
This effectively makes the farmers slaves to the seed providers and that is morally wrong. |

Mmkay, but why cant we send them unaltered food? Its like saying, "hey, we dont want to eat this because we know it will us up, so its not really a 'loss' if we give it to you, and we dont really care if your children have three noses."
Thats their point. Not in the fact that theyre sending food. |

eh. genetically altered crops have a higher output. feeds more starving people. I agree that altering seed viability is ed though. |

true, however isnt this also meant to prevent them from accidental cross-pollination thus ruining natural resources? |

I find it interesting that you Ang ' ela_ie chose to "go veggie" because of the envirorment. I did understand your explanation, still I find it very odd. I guess you didn't like any kind of meat in the first place.
Guess I'm more of the idea that even though we have the power to kill species, destroy ecosystems, up the ozone layer, start global warming and such. I believe we as humans are but a blink in the earth's life.
Everyone has the right to choose, no matter how weird the choice is. |
