Huh??? NK didn't have nukes 5 years ago, so what was the reason the US didn't invade? I will agree that opposing countries seem to get this "get nukes to ward off america" thought, but it's awfully paranoid. There are many countries that don't have nukes that we don't threaten.
I think the main thing we should be worried about out of this whole thing is another round of nuclear arms races, as I'd be surprised if Japan holds off, now. South Korea and Taiwan are other ones that could go after nukes.
Another issue is that NK is a poor nation. They haven't had the money to feed their people, yet they've had the money to build nuclear weapons. What's that show you about their value on human life vs. their value on power? Giving poor nations sudden weaponry and increased power is really dangerous, as they suddenly have the means to blackmail neighbors to get their economy running. It's a constant ace up their sleeves in any sort of negotiation, which is something that even their closest ally, China, doesn't think is fair or safe. Most of the other countries with nuclear weapons have very strong militaries and weapons capabilities besides their nuclear weapons and would be unwilling to open that Pandora's box.
I don't really understand how anyone can be happy about this, as suddenly we've included one more player in the race to end the world. I wasn't thrilled when India and Pakistan went nuclear (the only ones to go nuclear in my life), but at least their governments use diplomacy, which is more than can be said for Kim Jong Il, as we've all witnessed in the duration of his reign. |

Thank you for the first sensible post from an opposite stance.
I agree to a certain extent, that NK is poor etc, but so is America. It doesn't bear thinking about the $bns that US spends on 'defense' contractors, yet there are a whole host of social deprevation issues within its own borders.
I just can't hack the philosiphy that seems to reign supreme amongst the Bush administration, which is:
America is the governor of the world.
America says who can and who can't have nukes
If you're not with America, you're against them.
The self-perpetuated belief that they are the bastion of democracey when infact if leaders who they want in power don't get elected, they either send in the CIA (Chilie) or they complain and ignore(Palestine). |

Have you been here? I complain about how the middle class loses ground to the wealthy, but to call America poor is just retarded. Per capita, I'd say that the US does enjoy the highest standard of living in the world. Have you ever been here? Even the poor rednecks in the mountains of West Virginia have all the means for their survival, though it's not pretty in comparison to stardards of say the nicer parts of LA or NYC. I've lived here in very differing parts of the country (live in NYC now, lived in western PA, which in some ways, could be Kentucky or W. Virgina, in my entire childhood). My family was far from wealthy, just the high end of the lower class, maybe low end of middle according to income levels, yet we never had need for food, shelter, or even entertainment growing up. I doubt that North Korea could even claim close from what little info has leaked out of their isolated nation. By the way, I just watched 3 people get executed on CNN a few minutes ago for contacting the outside world.

They proceeded to make the bomb because oppenheimer and the entire manhatten project beleived that in creating such a powerful weapon, it would somehow end war, because it was made to dangerous. I guess they didnt forsee people not using them rampantly in war. |
