I've got free Southwest voucher tickets, however Southwest doesn't fly into that little Bar Harbor airport nor Banghor, Portland, etc., not ANYWHERE in Maine. The closest I would land is Manchester, New Hampshire. How difficult would it be to receive transportation from NH to BH? I'll be leaving in December, a couple weeks before Christmas. How isolated does BH become in the winter months, in regards to available transporation? AM I outta luck?
Orrrrrrr- should I just save up and take US Airways into Bar Harbor. ( as it seems it's the only airline in the US that flies directly to BH) $600 round trip :/ :nervous:
Orrrrr - is the weather so treacherous that I shouldn't even travel to Maine during December? |

heh, depends where you're staying in maine
if you're right in a town or something could be a lot of fun
my place is right on the water and about a 45 minute drive to the nearest store of any kind (5 of those minutes are just the driveway)
so yeah, in the winter we get veeeery shut off and veeeery cold
but if you're staying like in bar harbor that'd be a blast
yes, it'll be cold, but maine's got some absolutely breathtaking scenery that time of year
lsse, getting from manchester to bar harbor...dunno bout the best way to do that at all to be honest, i'm no help there |

Thanks for the replies, Mez.
Actually, I'm wanting to visit College of the Atlantic on Mt. Desert Island, within walking distance of Bar Harbor. I could room a night there, but I think I'd rather scope out and stay a night in BH. I'm just worried with everything shutting down, whether or not I'll be able to catch a bus or taxi?
What can I look forward to in the town? or does everyone go to Bangor & Portland for the nightlife?
& when you say cold, how cold? I'm getting mixed notions on what clothing to have. I've been told lotsa layers, while others say just a sweater and winter coat, boots, etc.
How do you like Maine? |

i ingb love maine
that said, in a t-shirt and shorts i don't get cold till it drops into the 50's
thats hilarious too, i can see that island from my place's front porch :p (ways off thouggh and only barely)
i dunno really about nightlife or anything, but yeah i'd say there's not gonna be much of any nightlife in bar harbor
idk really though, haven't been up there in a year or two
oh and when i say cold, just did some weather recon
high today is 58
the average high and low for the middle of november are around 45 and 27 respectively
and thats not counting wind chill and whatnot
its definitely doable, but yeah |

^ besos bello. ahora, donde estas? Barbados, Switzerland, Rio Muni?
ha! thats crazy Mezzir. you must live in an ideal spot, close to Arcadia too? you're right. if I'm going to Maine, it's not for the nightlife. it's always one or the other. Why did I think the winters were harsh? what your saying describes the temperatures here now in the Midwest. Does it take a severe dip in Dec/Jan? |
|
|
| mezzir |
not severe, but keep in mind things get a lot colder when you're walking through a foot and a half of snow and its sleeting ;)
edit: i should also add that i always think its colder than it is because the place i go has very little insulation and no heating except a fireplace in one room :p |

| I heard Maine is pretty but i'd only go to visit during the summer, its too cold and isolated to live there |

| I've been to Kennebunk a bunch of times...it's more towards the southern tip. Its a pretty chill place but it's more of a "vacation tourist spot" with a ton of craft shops for all the rich people from New England to come and buy in. Um, George Bush Sr's vacation house is there too but thats about it. |
