Internet connection troubles...

I am connected to the t'internet through a router - but even though my computer is telling me I have successfully connected, I can't receive any data. Which means I can't connect to web pages (page cannot be displayed), msn, irc, etc.

For the first couple of days I just assumed it was my isp that were having problems and all would be fine and dandy in a few days. But today I plugged in my normal usb modem and i'm back in business.

Any idea what the is going on, and how can I fix it? The router itself surely can't be broken, nor can the ethernet cable, otherwise it wouldn't be saying it's connected properly. So what the deuce is happening here?

Cheers.

Is your router connected to a modem?
DJ Mikey Mike
No. Sorry, I should have mentioned that.

There's your problem. You can only connect to the internet through a modem.

Your router just creates the physical connection between computers for networking, but doesn't connect to the internet directly. Your computer is probably telling you that your network is successfully connected (Local Area Connection).
DJ Mikey Mike
No, what I mean is that the router IS the modem. I am not that thick. I've been using this setup for about a year - For it to all of a sudden be doing this is very odd. Something must have happened to the settings and I don't know what it is.

Im sure you've already unplugged it and plugged it in again a few times, if not, do that.

Try logging into the router and checking the settings. Something may have gotten corrupted and a setting changed. Make sure that the correct port forwarding is on.

Also try pinging the routers IP address. That will check that, at least.
DJ Mikey Mike
Yes Chris, I've tried unplugging and plugging it back in again a few times. :p

I can't get into my router settings, because that goes through my web browser - and it's refusing to let me even display those. (Page cannot be displayed.)

How do I ping the routers IP address?
THE_Chris
Hmmm. You should be able to get into the router settings, if you cant do that then thats a good sign of a problem. Whenever that happens at home with me I just reset the router which clears it up. I do it through the web browser too.

(BTW if you cant do this then pinging the routers IP wouldnt work either)

Factory reset I reckon. Unfortunatly if theres any settings you've made then they'll be lost. On my router, theres a little button on the back that you push with a pencil that does a factory default reset. Its different from a normal reset or an unplug, and might kick the router up the arse and make it work.

I think I had a problem similar to this. Do you have Sky TV?

Question - what is the make of your modem/router and are you using ADSL or cable?

DJ Mikey Mike
It was a Belkin / Modem all in one Router, and I am on ADSL.

I replaced it, and all is fine now. It was still inside it's one year warranty so I just got it replaced for free.

Cheers anyway.

edit - However, I do have another internet question here if you could all take a look:
