showing your feelings towards someone

When there is someone that you like, do you show all your feelings or do you take that slow, hide what you feel and wait until the other peson says or does something first? One person has told me that I am too direct and show my feelings too much. Why not show that? why keep quiet? But i know that if you show it TOO much that it also turns the other person off. What are your opinions on that?
