Ok, it's a hardware issue. Either junk it, or eBay the crap, and get a different one.

the error message says something about "explorer.exe"... so its still fixable, just figuring out how..

After you saying you've troubleshooted by reinstalling Windows and such, Windows is not the issue. You will get Explorer.exe issues, when you have hardware problems. If the Explorer.exe was a software issue, Windows wouldn't be working at all. It sounds as though your external hard drive is generic, with very little tech support. Speaking of which, is there a tech support number for the unit? If so, I bet if you call them, they'll tell you it's a problem with Windows, just to get you off the phone. :whip:

it suggests that okra is missing in the equation!

The issue here could very well be hardware but if he keeps testing it on the same machine it is impossible to establish if it is the computers hardware or the hard drives hardware that is at fault!

MUST TEST ON ANOTHER COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!

MUST TEST ON A MAC!!!

There's nothing wrong with the hard drive. You only need to kick your PC a couple of times and it should work as good as when it was new. Show it who's the boss.

If that doesn't work, threaten to unplug it. That'll show it!

ing plug it one
kid nyce
you shoulda posted this in the Tech Forums, you probably would have gotten better non-bull responses.

Did you try plugging it into a different usb port? I wouldn't go as far as formatting your computer just yet, but if you are in need of a reformat, then I say go for it.

Try troubleshooting it by throwing another USB device (flash drive) and see if that reads fine.
