Need your help - Track Selection & Presentation

I have been invited by a non-profit organisation to DJ at a huge gathering comprising of mostly and (almost entirely) of families. It is an open-air day-event with quite a transient crowd (come and go type) with a total of more 1000 people to be attending it and atleast 300 or so people to be present at any given point of time.

I am really at wits end to decide what to play. I have been playing Trance and House in and out but some of friends warn me that it might not work in front of a diverse and totally family-oriented crowd like this. In fact, i myself feel that i'll probably have to squeeze in lot of 80s dance type stuff.

I'll like your help on the following points:
1. Track Selection (If you can list some track that can catch immediate attention at such events, as also tracks that can help me pull them out of slumber if they doze off).
2. Presentation: Any tips/recommendations on opening tracks, closing sequence, something to throw in between etc.
3. General track recommendations for such type of gatherings/events
4. Anything that you feel might be relevant.

Appreciate your help.

Thanks.

you're right.. mostly electronic dance music being a hit at any party where EDM is not common is all about the presentation of it... here is what works the best in your situation..

start off chill and housey... try something by Steve Porter or Mathew Dekay for your first track. Talking Music.

Slowly evolve your set faster. Don't force your set on anyone.. you will know by crowd reaction when to move the pitch up.. and slowly move it up on certain builds, certain tracks.. don't let anyone notice when u move the pitch up. That's the last thing you want ppl to notice especially at a family event..

Remember the "trim" knob is your best friend. Make sure every track is the same volume.. mixing into a track with a lower volume could kill the energy.

Once you've got things up to speed.. here are some surefire floorfillers. (these are techy tracks & artists... so save them for at least hour 4 of your party.)

- anything by Randy Katana (Play it Louder is great cuase everyone knows the "blade" riff).. all of his other hits are surefire floorfillers.. Plastik Fantastik, Pleasure island, Tribal Shock, Transcentral, ect.

- almost anything by Eric Sneo... Black Hole is great cause of the "heard-it-before" Shannon - Let The Music Play riff. His other stuff is great too. This guy never fails.

Another good 80s remix to squeeze in is yello - oh yeah (sander van doorn mix)

a good EDM night for me usually progresses on with these genres

chill house/trance (ambient trance and house, prog, ect)
-> house (pumping, tribal, electrohouse ect)
-> trance (prog, uplifting)
-> tech trance + techno
-> hard trance + hard nrg

play one hour of each main style listed here. If you were to play all these styles in order, you'd have a 5 hour set. Remember since this isn't a big EDM event, there is no opening and closing dj.. so you're playing the sets and roles they would play as well.

The one hour per style is just a suggestion of thumb, but it is better to go with the flow of the crowd than the flow of your watch. There is no one cookie cutter way to evolve a set.

Whatsupdog,

Thanks. Will definitely keep that in mind. I have begun shortlisting on the tracks and will keep it simple and easy flowing to start with and take it from there.

I think i'll keep the opening few tracks on the lines of mixes of 'california dreaming' and 'owner of a lonely heart' kind of stuff.

I am waiting for others experienced members to pool in their recommendations.

Btw, it is gonna be about 3 hrs long.

Thanks you again.
