Synergy.

Take spaceflight. We weren't alive for the apollo missions. But I can easily imagine everyone crowding around their tv to watch them. Today in a sense no one cares about space flight because the 'magic' of space has been replaced with 'routine'.

At the Mountains of Madness was written at a time when the last outposts of 'magic' on earth were in the mountains and in the artic. It's set in the mountains of the antartic (double bonus!)

Or to translate all of that into the CORe version, reading about fairies when you know they don't exist is a lot less interesting than reading about them when the forest might be filled with goblins and unicorns

I see, that's a really neat point of view. Very cool :)

He has on rare occasions whispered disjointed and irresponsible things about "The black pit," "the carven rim," "the protoShoggoths," "the windowless solids with five dimensions," "the nameless cylinder," "the elder Pharos," "Yog-Sothoth," "the primal white jelly," "the color out of space," "the wings," "the eyes in darkness," "the moon-ladder," "the original, the eternal, the undying," and other bizarre conceptions; but when he is fully himself he repudiates all this and attributes it to his curious and macabre reading of earlier years.

15... 1936... my mind would be doing sumersaults reading it!

I don't know about Mr. North specifically but most male porn actors start in gay porn.
