...

While the government was being peppered with questions about the new Clean Air Plan, Holland says a Liberal jokingly asked MacKay about the impact of pollution on humans and animals: “What about your dog?”

According to Holland, MacKay motioned toward Stronach’s vacant seat and replied: “You already have her.”

That's why I can actually watch CSPAN in Canada! There's always some good trashing that goes on. but because its all politics you can feel less guilty about it than if you were watching Jerry Springer. ;)

Belinda makes me sick. She was on tv today crying about the alledged comment. What was disgusting was how she actually had the nerve to say that "the comment is sexist" and something to the effect that it reflects conservative party policy yadda yadda yadda.

hey Belinda, perhaps if you were more of a role model you wouldnt be subject to such comments all the time! If Mckay said what he said its not because you are a woman, its because you are BELINDA.

Im sick of belinda playing the gender card everytime someone has critism for her misdeeds. Whether its double crossing her constituants by crossing the floor, banging married men, or being on the receiving end of a jilted ex boyfriend's comment, according to Belinda the critism is always "because im a woman". Does this person ever for one minute even stop to think that perhaps her own actions have something to do with it??

Well belinda, you do a disservice not only to yourself with these comments, but also your gender.

STFU and just be happy that your father can afford to buy your way into power. And no Belinda, i didnt say that because you are a woman. I said that because you are a Stronach!

The idiots in this story that are trying to make a political case out of nothing all deserve to be punished in the next election. Either that or the next time ANYONE makes a derogatory comment towards a male MP, that MP should stand up in front of the cameras and publicly state that it was a sexist comment and that it was said because "im a man".

Give me a ing break. I really hope that the canadian public has smartened up to the race/gender card game and can see through this BS.

OTTAWA (CP) - With a political storm swirling around allegations of sexist swagger, Belinda Stronach rose in the House of Commons on Friday to defend her honour against a former paramour.

Stronach, showing no emotion, demanded an apology from Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay for using a "very inappropriate word to describe me."

It wasn't actually a word, but rather a reference made Thursday in the Commons.

The barely audible exchange was caught on audio tape, with one MP asking "what about your dog?" and someone responding: "You have her."

Opposition MPs say MacKay made the sexist response while pointing to Stronach's empty seat.

MacKay staged a well-publicized photo-op with a "loyal" dog at his side, on his family's Nova Scotia farm when he and Stronach broke up after her defection to the Liberal party in 2005.

Outside the House, Stronach said that while she's upset by the alleged slur, she's more upset by what it says about the Conservative party.

"What I find more disappointing today is that it goes beyond this," Stronach said.

"It is really a reflection of the character and of the attitude of this government toward women.

The fact that no one would take responsibility for this kind of a comment today, I think, shows that."

Conservative MP Jason Kenney, speaking for the government, said merely that the matter was in the hands of the Speaker and that all parties could show better decorum in the House.

He also claimed that a Liberal MP once called Environment Minister Rona Ambrose "a pretty plant."

MacKay denied calling Stronach a dog, but he didn't elaborate on precisely what he did say.

He noted that there is no record of the alleged slur in the official transcript of House proceedings, known as Hansard.

"The Speaker will rule on that," he said Friday after touring a sewage treatment plant on the Halifax waterfront.

"They can check the record of Hansard.

It's not there.

It's not there.

I said nothing about a dog."

He accused the Liberals of trying to distract people with the "silly and scurrilous" allegations.

Speaker Peter Milliken told the Commons that he can't rule on the matter because there is no official record of the alleged slur and the audio tape is not clear.

That prompted the Liberals to request that the tape be sent to an audio expert for analysis.

All parties, smelling political blood, used the incident to hammer the Tories, with the Bloc Quebecois calling on MacKay to be booted from cabinet.

New Democrat MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis called the alleged remark "sexist and demeaning."

"I thought we were at a place in this House where women were no longer demeaned," she said.

"Will no one in the Conservative party condemn this?"

Liberal House Leader Ralph Goodale said the incident "reveals a demeaning attitude toward members of this House and women in particular.

"This is not trivial.

Sadly, it seems all too typical," he said.

"Typical of bullies - intolerant and vindictive.

The instincts that give rise to this insult are fundamentally inconsistent with the values that make us a respectful and decent people.

"After depicting a woman as 'his dog,' how can the minister of foreign affairs pretend to promote women's rights in Afghanistan or anywhere else?" In Halifax, the topic dominated one radio call-in show Friday.

"I think it was inappropriate and at least there should be a public apology made to her," one caller told News 95-7, which also broadcasts in Saint John, N.B., and Moncton, N.B.

"I think he should be reprimanded for what he's done.

It's embarrassing.

It's very embarrassing.

It's getting out of hand."

Still, some callers defended MacKay.

"They take pot shots at each other all the time in the House of Commons," said a caller named Fraser.

"They say terrible things, like bickering kids in a schoolyard."
