My snareroll sucks!

I know its lame but i suck at it.
How do u all do it?
What are the effects used?
some one tell me how to build a simple 2 bar snare roll.
All i could do is automate the volume on it.. some ideas and samples pls.

| Try a phaser? That's the only effect I've ever heard on a snare roll.. Besides the obligatory Reverb + EQ of course. |

modulate the length of the snare sample, let it go from very short to long. that'll give more and more power.
combine it with pitch, raise it a littlebit during the modulation of notelength (works alone, too, of course)
try a hipass filter, let pass only the high freqs at first and lower the cutoff continiously
and of course: play with the pattern played. e.g. start with 8th for some bars, then let some 16th follow, then 32th and so on. |

I use phasers on hats, not usually snares though. All kinds of modulation will work though - flangers, chorus, Cubase's "metallizer", etc.
Although I'm really more partial to drum fills, stutter edits and sweeps than snare rolls. |

How exactly does one stutter edit? Just go down to 64th notes and cut up like crazy? |

I also use sweeps a lot for the obvious reason :D

Glitches are usually done in the 1/64th to 1/128th range, stutters usually between 1/16th and 1/64th.
Otherwise yes, you're sort of right, except "like crazy" kind of implies just randomly messing around, which won't get you that far, you have to know what kind of effect you're looking for. And, as I said in another thread, the hard part is really knowing what to edit, not how to edit it.
Different people usually do these edits differently but mine usually go through a few stages, first being an initial cut-up, then some fade-ins/outs to get rid of the clicks, usually some modulation, delay or reverb, and sometimes some additional automation, EQ, etc. at the end. That's certainly not the only way, though.
It's a lot easier to do a snare roll obviously. :p |
