Well looks like it's my first ever created review so here goes:
My gf and I and got into Guv at around 11:00-11:15 after a two-month long hiatus, too my surprise the club was practically empty, I know it was kinda early and all but if I can recall that time before would have had the room at least half-filled, I don't even think it was a quarter-full. Anyhow MO is on the decks with a great opening set IMO, mixed in a little bit of tribal here and there and some prog/electro. Choon for MO's set would have to be "Sexy "? I think the name is... someone correct me on this.
By 12 club was getting more and more full which was nice and a bonus was that throughout the night the club never got really full, just a nice amount. I wasn't really having that much of a good time at that moment not because of the tunes but I was waiting for a friend to arrive with my "party supplies" and I had a skull-numbing headache to boot. By 1:15 I was about ready to go home cuz I couldn't take the pain anymore, needless to say it subsided after I had taking my pills and that's when the night began for me.
Scumfrog came on shortly after 2 I think just as I was peaking and boy what a ride I had. Honestly though, I was hoping he'd me a tad more dirtier like he was at CZ but I know this is the Guv and one must turn it down to Guv standards. All in all I had a great night and stayed till closing.
Where were all the TAs last night? I only ran into two: Ben and MaxTo, I guess the rest were at Sonic or something. Lastly I noticed they had a Mark Olivier CD from US11, anybody heard it as I may pick it up but $25 is pretty steep especially if you can't even sample it. |

good pics Dallas....
Honestly, I had a ing stellar night, stayed in the Gallery for 99% of the night.
Vinyljunkies opened the Gallery (11 until 2), warmed up the crowd perfectly, by the last 40 mins of their set they had the Gallery by the balls. Very impressed.
Nathan came on afterwards and somehow brought the energy level up even higher in that place. The Gallery went off close to 10 times during a two hour set. Awesome. Seriously. Midway through his set we felt the need to explore the rest of the Guv to which no room was as fun nor as rockin as the Gallery was. Fab was hammering out the Drink but it was quiet in there.
Saw about 10 mins of the Scumfrog, sound in the main room seemed weak, and the crowd was totally vacant. He played a killer remix of "Lez Zeppelin - Baby, I'm Going to Leave You"...
Closed out the Gallery with Addy who was relenteless.
By far one of the best nights musically in Toronto I've had in a long time. Thanks for that boys. Great to see Natalie et co. Made the night THAT much more fun.
some of my fav of Jay's pics...

After the fantastic time out that the last scumfrog extended set in the main room was, I was pretty excited heading into last night. Especially having taken a whole 2 weeks away from the dance floor, i was in some sorta foot stompin mode. Only downside was that my partner in crime was being responsible and working then next morning. Lauren however was kind enough to drive me all the way to GUV!!...no go bus for me Smile Smile Smile
Got in around 11.30 and found our good friend Lisa causing a ruckus by the front speakers. You can always count on her to create her own vibe when Mark Oliver is on the decks. Great energy! Mark played a very good opener with alot of his bigger tunes from recent weeks being dropped. My favourite had to be the Justin Timberlake - Sexy back with Whos Who - Sexy brilliantly interlaced. Genius on the decks!!!
The Frog was on at about 1.30 or so i think and started nice and chunky. A strange thing happened though....that ever reliable guv main room did not respond like they did a year ago. I was on the stage at this point and the only way i can describe it is by calling it a mindless, directionless mass of dancers. Jesse (scumfrog) jumped...drummed....sang.....high energy. Yet no response. My attempts to hit the floor from the stage and try to lead by example were answered by sketchy "k-tards" surrounding me all tripped out. I was its quite safe to say quite uncomfortable. This was a new feeling. One that wasn't ever supposed to be uncomfortable. My beloved main room for the last 3 years....so disappointing. I danced for a bit longer and then after Lisa went upstairs i headed to the gallery.
After a quick phonecall from the payphone at 3am.....lol........i hit the front of the room to find nathan barato on the decks. What a welcome change this was. Dark layers with that distinct barato intelligence as i like to call it. This was something good....some hard....something to dance to. Barato ripped it for the next 2 hours. Flawless mixing, superb track selection and some of the most retarded breakdowns ive heard this year. How does he do it????
Once Barato was done working my already sore joints, Addy stepped up. Those who heard Addy at 10 year in the drink were no doubt excited as he looked set to build upon a fantastic barato performance. First i headed back to the main room..grabbed lisa and her friend lisa...not a typo...then headed back to the gallery. Addy was well on his way by this point moving along at a frantic pace. Fantastic house music as per usual. His mixing was a tad off at times...but this was only because he was messing with 3 or more layers playing at a time. Vintage sound from the man who made the 6am slot a the CZ his own for years. Only disappointment was that the lights came on at 5.30...a tad early for the gallery. His final song was "Big Love" and was well received by the still very full Gallery.
Back to the main room where scumfrog was still playing well but much slower than what had just transpired in the gallery. The crowd was still garbage however and the night ended soon after.
A solid solid night completely with the toronto locals yet again deliivering when i needed em the most.
Shoutouts to Shaya ofcourse (HAPPY BIRTHDAY BUDD!!), Lisa, new lisa (met her during the night..a new guvaddict), nick and rick and the rest....
good times people....

Guv was definitely hurting for customers this Sat.... main room looked its busiest after they closed all the other rooms down, and they closed early. Surprisingly the doors to the Gallery were open early on, so we were able to go in there and listen to some good beats, and ran into Jon & Kevin there, where some good laughs were had. Personally, I thought MO's set on Sat was one of the worst I'd ever heard from him- none of the songs transitioned well with each other, and the mixes were short. Got a text msg from Jesse and went to meet him in the main room. Introduced him to the guy dressed in drag (who ironically resembled Scumfrog's new CD cover, but this is some weird bachelor-pre-wedding tradition his friends do). Jesse was sporting a cute wig himself! Jesse started at 2am, complete w/drumpad, cymbal & mic, and yet even with all that, the crowd seemed dead. He was definitely playing the 'big room sound', quite different from a Zone set. The Led Zeppelin mix was awesome! Samples of Music Revolution & Love at First Site could be heard during the set. Left the booth to join the dance floor & mingle. I cant really tracklist much else, as I was pretty wasted. For the 1st time I actually called it quits b4 his set was over, and left shortly b4 6:30, where the shenanigans continued on Langley Ave well into the next evening.
Got a copy of his new CD (thanks)- its really good! Pick it up. |

Got to Guv late after a dinner party but was feeling tired and had an awful cough that gave me a terrible head ache.
Guv was half empty and as Nat said Oliver was not at his best. Went to Gallery where I saw Nat, Jon, etc. - as everyone else said music was way better in the Gallery.
Caught an hour of Scumfrogs set - liked it but I couldn't deal with the crowd with the way I was feeling. I don't mind sketchy, pushy crowds at all, in fact I usually love the crowd at guv - it adds something to the night - but I have to admit the last few non big event night the crowd has gotten to me and I find myself in Gallery most of the night.
I think its time Guv started to clean up its crowd a bit - there is a big difference between people who are drunk, high, and those who are cracked out beyond belief who have no clue where they are, what they are listening to.
Maybe I am just getting too old for the Guv main room. |

Jesse played a remix of Prince - I would Die 4 U and did the Vocals - massive.
I guess you were drunk Nat - you texted me from the DJ Booth when he was doing it and yet no mention in your review. |
