Well I can sure as hell say that it wasn't a Trance DJ... This genre is way too new.
As far as I'm concerned it all started in Jamaica with reggae dancehall artists. People like King Tubby were amoung the first to used looped samples and beats to use as background tracks instead of live instruments.
The emerging hip hop culture began to popularize these techniques as people like DJ kool herc (who was influenced by the Jamaican scene)began to mix records together and loop samples.
I don't feel like going into great detail but in my opinion DJing generally has evolved from that scene.
But if you meant how Trance "came to be" you should check out this movie:
"MODULATIONS" By Ira Lee
This movie kicks major ass and generally explains how electronic music evolved.

| The whole club DJ thing came about in the 70's. Although, in the 60's there were discoteques...they really didn't feature DJ's doing any sort of mixing. In the 70's, the idea of a DJ doing live mixes started primarily in the gay clubs. It was a very crude setup.....no Tech 1200's that for sure. They would use 2 funky old turntables, no mixer, it would just be plugged into an amp that had "phono 1 & phono 2" and when one song ended they just flipped the switch and start the other record. After that, people started using mixers but for the most part, DJ's hadn't started beatmatching or overlays yet (kind of difficult if you have turntables with no pitch control, although there were turntables that had it but they were not very precise). Somewhere around that time Technics started developing turntables that were a little more accurate. The 1500's were all digital and very precise but you had to hold down a button to raise or lower the pitch and the response was very slow......then came the 1200's. That changed everything.Music was also changing at the same time. The music started to have more of a steady beat...(before that most of it was soul or R & B as far as dance music). With the music having more of a constant beat, the invent of the 1200's, one thing led to another and from there, it has evolved into what it is today. |
