Hail Canada!!! (pg. 2)

What seems to be getting forgotten, glossed over, swept under the rug or whatever you want to call it is that COMMERCE is a 2-WAY STREET. Both parties benefit mutually from their business relationship. Canada has a load of natural resources, which everybody knows (probably more than they could ever use in the foreseeable future). It benefits them to monetize some of those assets so that they can put the cash to good use for things like improving infrastructure. It does them no use to horde a few billion tons of wood and oil sludge when there is such a high opportunity cost in doing so. Nobody is forcing them to sell these assets--it is a mutually beneficial transaction.

This is a free economic system, Magneto--notice we don't have bread lines in the West like you had in communist Russia where everything was owned, controlled and distributed by the state.

I feel for for him though, sad that his hatred for the US has made him almost on the same level as Softcore Trancer, Purple and a few others. Hell I hate Canada for some things that I find as unforgivable like; Brian Adams, Alanis Morsett, Avril Lavigne, Sum41, Barenakedladies and the list goes on ;)

But with all joking aside, it does not take a genius to see that both countries benefit from each other in more ways than one.

that is such a loud color.... eh??

But the McKenzie Brothers were something special!

Where does opinion fall on Pamela Anderson?

I am not against American people, Ive been to USA, I love the people. I am against their governnment. They treat Canada terribly. Violate our rights by not following their NAFTA obligations, and telling WTO to jerk off.

Canada is too dependent on USA. We need to form better and more economic ties with other countries, so that if USA goes down, we dont go down with them. We need to be independent. You see, USA can probably survive without Canada. Canada can't. So USA is telling us to suck it, and we place the tail between our legs and say OK.

I'd say we should do more trade with EU, China, Russia and Japan. Instead of being deeply influenced, manipulated and taken advantage of by the States, Canada has a clear opportunity to establish its own "idea", and then perhaps United States will treat us with more respect and dignity, not America Junior or some helpless country that serves American interests.

hey, problem solved..are we done?

"In April 2006, The United States and Canada announced that they had reached a tentative settlement to end the current dispute. Under the preliminary terms, the United States would lift duties provided lumber prices continue to stay above a certain range. Below the specified range, a mixed export tax/quota regime would be implemented on imports of Canadian lumber. As a part of the deal, $4 billion of the $5 billion in duty deposits collected would be returned. Of the remaining one billion, half would go to the U.S. lumber industry while the other half would go toward joint initiatives."

The problem with the strategy you outlined is that it would be a strategy whereby Canada wouldn't be persuing its own interests, but rather your interests. If it were more lucrative to trade with the EU, China, Russia, or Japan in the place of the US than Canada would probably be doing it already. Given the fact that Canada is the largest trading partner for the US, have you considered that the US is probably as dependant upon Canada as she is to us?

If that argument doesn't work than think about it this way. Canada trades in a lot of other goods than oil. What do you think would happen if Canada joined OPEC and slapped quotas on oil? You really think countries would respect free trade agreements with all its other goods? How exportable would Canadian lumber be if it were slapped with a hefty import tarriff by the US? A policy of restrictive trade may work for Middle Eastern countries that have no other exportable goods but Canada has many other things that it exports where it does not hold such a monopolistic market on.

The U.S. has deep pockets and high demand. It's very doubtful Canada could find similar profit margins elsewhere, much less more favorable arrangements.
