question about builds

Im pretty good now with my melodies, strings, pads etc and everything else.

the only trouble im having is with builds ,just a few questions

do you normally have your 4 bar melodies and builds, pattern close to the rhythm ,in your main melodic line,or something totally different and is it always better to use a different timbre for your builds? it just seems when i have a build then drop into the main lead everyone is lost because they feel my builds were the main lead.

so what do you guys normally do when constructing your builds share some of your tips:)

and would trance be trance without builds and tension?

theres not really a set way to make a build... i suppose the goal would just be to build up enough tension and maybe hint at the main lead , ie play the first bar looping or something to that effect. I personally like building up as much tension as possible so the release is very big. .. but thats not the only way to do it.

and most music, not just trance, needs the tension/release... its what gives it emotion alot of the time... and energy. so i would say trance without tension would be...... ambient ? lol. hopefully i helped you out man.
