Retarded feud in my neighbourhood

alrite.. this is prolly one of the stupidest situations i've ever heard of, so juss thought i'd share..
i live in the Yonge & Sheppard area of North York/Toronto. the neighbourhood that my house is situated is fairly upper middle class i would say. demographically most seem to be working class families with children, as well as young professionals and a few students. racially it's comprised primarily of Caucasians, many of which are WASPs & Jews, as well as pockets of asians here and there.
so anyways, apparently there was a recent row between a neighbour of mine and some of the people living on our street. you see, the area which I live in consists of homes many of which were built in the 1950's; bungalows more or less. Many of the homeowners and private developers today are tearing down the old houses and building these new 2-3 door garage monster homes on these little lots. This has been drawing some alarm by some of the older homeowners who are afraid that this ongoing redevelopment will change the the makeup of the area and add additional traffic and congestion to the streets.
One of the landladies on my street had the intent of tearing down the house on her lot and building not 1, but 2 thin but high homes to accommodate additional rental space on the property. Unfortunately, some of her neighbours on the street were opposed to this idea and managed to get council to block the redevelopment.
so get this, ever since last July I've noticed that the people who live in the house across the street from mine have been nothing short of unruly. there are always a lot of cars parked outside the home late at night and the sounds of hiphop and reggae blasting away at almost all times of the day.
now, i have an aunt who lives a few houses down from me on the same street, and she knows this Italian lady that lives on the other side of our street beside the unruly neighbours. The Italian lady pretty much knows everyone in our area and one day told my aunt about the situation with our boisterous neighbours. It turns out that the landlady had a row with the neighbours who were opposed to her development plans, and as a result, intentionally sought out unruly tenants to rent out her house. Apparently, she even went as far as ensuring they were not only unruly - but black. Supposedly because she felt it would irritate the predominantly white residents in the area.
Ironically, the unruly tenants had their lease expire in spring and were supposed to have vacated. Instead, they refused and ended up staying there the entire summer. As a result, the angry landlady was forced to go to court to have them evicted from the property. Furthermore, the house was left with damage throughout which the landlady was supposedly forced to have had repaired on her own. Having been fed up with her inability to annoy her enemy neighbours, she has since resigned to selling the home, but again not without some controversy. It turns out that she has sought the buyer of a large immigrant Indian family with the intent of moving in a big number of residents into the small house in a further effort to leave a legacy of annoyance behind her.
seriously.. i've never seen anyone use racial annoyance as a weapon to get back at people, like wtf??

her response was stupid but perhaps the residents shouldnt have been whiney in the first place. ITS A CITY and its changing. Infill is the future of toronto and without it transportation will become even more of a nightmare.
Whiney neighbours get a big zero and the racial response gets a big zero...
sounds like one big whacked out street |

Cool post.
I love hearing the weird that neighbours do when they hate each other.
I have a friend who lives on a street in East Scarborough, middle class, predominatley white (which is frankly irrelevant) these two neighbours who live across the street from each other litterally dispise each other, both dads and moms have fist faught..one of the days went to jail for a night over something related to their hatred....brutal...my friend told me that it got so bad that one house purchased a massive camera that records the other house 24 hours a day.
I said bull.
So i went and the one house has one of those Metal gear solid (oldschool) security cams, with the flashing red dot pointed directly at the other house.
sorry, not a hijack, just i am sure there are tons of stories like this out there. |

If I owned a house on a street where a neighbour was going to tear theirs down and put up two rental, non-conforming structures...I'd be pretty pissed off too.
At least the homeowners were trying to protect THEIR neighbourhood...and maintain the value of THEIR HOME.
This landlady didn't even live there...and didn't care that she could be ing with everyone else's property values out of her own greed...and her response is to intentionally up the neighbourhood with bad tenants?
ZERO respect and consideration for the other homeowners...so good, karma's a bitch and she got what she deserved :p |

As i said. Infill is the future of toronto. And in fact, neighbourhoods experiencing infill have seen dramatic increases in property value since others follow suit due to demand of higher densities. I cite Cabbagetown as one very good example of this.
I would argue that the homeowners in fact stunted their property value growth as a direct result of this NIMBYism.
Very sad considering that that area is actually considered a high density growth node in toronto's official plan. The residents really screwed themselves over. |

I don't have a problem with tearing down a house and rebuilding...as that can obviously be a good thing for everyone. Having lived in Cabbagetown, until last year, for 4 years, I agree that area is a great example. You'll notice that people generally try to blend in with the surrounding style and architecture when they rebuild.
Those two slim, tall rental-specific houses though...that would likely have a negative impact on the other houses. |
