Okayokay  I think Tiesto rules, but where does Jeff Mills' reputation come from?! I know he is one of the pioneer guys of trance music but when I listen to his songs like
DNA, Medusa, Solid Sleep, The Bells, The Extremist etc. I feel like turning the volume down. |

To really appreciate Tiesto you have to see him live. Being lucky to see him at a rave this summer, I must say that he is unlike any other DJ I've seen.
First of all, ALL the music he plays is amazing. Most DJs just have like 20-30% of good tracks.
Secondly, he is actually dancing himself while he is DJing. It is really great to see that DJ enjoys the music himself, and not just plays it to earn money.
As far as being repetitive, I think every DJ is like that. You can't expect Tiesto to play totally new stuff every month. Not enough good tracks are released in such short period of time. However if you compare Tiesto's set at Innercity and his Magic 6 album which was recorded this summer, you'll see that they are TOTALLY different.
As far as his tracks go, don't tell me that
something like Major League-Wonder sounds even remotely similar to Gouryella - Gouryella or Allure-No more tears. |

I must say that Tiesto rocks! Indeed, his liveset at Innercity isn't his best one. His last album (Summerbreeze) is way much better. In my mind, his favorite liveset is at Energy 2000 on the new year's Eve. His 3 last Magiks are very good too.
Regarding Oakie, I really liked him before, but as many of you mentionned, he is getting really boring and ty. His Perfecto Presents Another World is really not good at all. I listened to it for 15 mins and cut it off. His Goa Mix '94 kicks ass. Tranceport and live at Gatecrasher rock too. Well, I think i've made my point.

Yep.... I agree. In order to experience the magik of Tiesto, You'll have to see him live. The first time I witnessed him in Wintergalactic held at the Docks, Toronto, he literally blew me away....
His sets are so melodic yet at times hard... which I love, so much so that the promoters brought him back for the second time... this year!!! Watching him up at the booth, smiling everytime he lay his record down just drives the crowd insane....
And.. Oakey ... he is still great, although there was a point where I really got bored with his stuff. Anyway, I wouldn't mind paying to watch him... there is still this classic thing about Oakey..

| Hmm I'd don't think seeing Tiesto play live as opposed to on cd would make the tracks he plays any less dull and crappy :P |

Damn! What a load of people here who consider Tiesto as an ordinary DJ who produces only melodic riffs and snares!
DJ Tiesto is definately a dynamic figure in the trance scene, a charismatic DJ who maintains eye-contact with the crowd as he lays those magnificent "plastics" on the platters, unlike Sasha & Digweed and many other superstar DJs (No offense to those fans out there but no DJ, in my personal experience, has made the crowd "bounce" that violently!)
I would have to agree that DJ Tiesto is indeed an upcoming superstar DJ in the same ranks as many others, but to be judging his remixes as being "ordinary" is simply passe.
To all who thinks that his remixes are crappy or ordinary, please I urge you to put on a pair of respectable headphones and listen carefully to each and every one of his productions, whether it be, Allure, Kamaya Painters, Gouryella...and many collaborations he accomplished with many other excellent producers. Listen without prejudice and think it over on what made you guys criticize his works. The riffs, synths and snares are simply amazingly introduced and in my mind, none has ever accomplished tunes and remixes as fast as he could.
Please anyone who can name a trance DJ/producer producing at this kinda speed? Bearing in mind he's a resident at many clubs and events all over the world.)
Let me ask you guys a question : How many of those ppl out there has actually attended a Live Tiesto set?
DJ Tiesto is ,without a doubt, a diligent and concientious DJ/producer and by any international standards, he ranks Number 1 in my heart.
I rest my case.

P/S I am not directing this mail to anyone in particular and this is not a piece I actually thought I would write about.

futurasound, my comments shouldn't have been directed towards Tiesto alone, since I consider the whole progressive fluff trance (this shouldn't be takes as a negative description) somewhat boring. I mean, most tracks, although beautifully composed and structured, are always done by the same formula ... 4/4 kick drum, pretty synth lines, breakdown, massive buildup (where everybody goes whacko) ... lather, rinse, repeat. No innovation. No experiments. No progress. The whole trance genre is becoming somewhat stale right now, and one of the reasons is its popularity. I mean, if lots of people like the formula, trance producers (including Tiesto ...) will follow it and pump out choon after choon after choon that offers very little new elemenst, and that is what destroys the whole thrill of 'new' music.
Mindbender, minimal techno (Jeff Mills) is the art of making music out of noise ... should not be compared with trance, since those are two totally different musical approaches. Some ppl like it, some don't. Pesonal taste ... should not be argued about.

Hey Skywarp,
isn't that "always the same buildup" not what defines a music style? Even pop music and rock consist of 3/4 or 4/4 rhythms... Classical music also sounds a lot alike if you compare different classical traxx.
And experimenting... That's kinda tough. You know the track " Did you hear me" by Red Light Disctrict? It has 20 beats instead of 16... You know what happens when you play a track like that? The crowd gets like totally confused.
The similarities in the style make what defines trance. Same goes for techno, club, pop, rock, latin, classic, celtic, etc. etc.
Hope you guys can agree on this, instead of pounding trance, just because it all sounds the same to you guys (to me, techno sounds all the same, sow...)

I agree with MenTall .. Trance music is music you can dance on ..:

What you just said is a description of Trance (except for "no innovation  ).. you change this description you no more have Trance .. if you want something else .. maybe you'll have to go for d'n'b, techno, acid, nu-nrg .. whatever! 
Let's talk about Tiesto now .. THE, in my opinion, master DJ at the very moment .. Why? Well, people already said it in previous messages : Tiesto is a DJ who #1 "takes care" of the crowd if I can say .. #2 brings new stuff everytime he's dj'ing .. #3 isn't dj'ing just for money but 'cause he likes music and love sharing it with others ... Personnaly I've never seen him LIVE but I saw some videos of trance-party with him in it and what you always see is a DJ dancing around, moving his arms in the air and smiling to the crowd, seeing people loving his music .. That's what makes him popular .. He's really close to the crowd and he wants it to be happy .. to have the impression of flying away in the trance waves (with or without E )
Well that's what I think .. TIESTO RULES!!!! Cya!

Mithandir, I'd have to disagree ... you can make really good trance without following that formula. Look for example at some of the older Platipus releases, or maybe Dragonfly or Flying Rhino (just to name a few labels). For me, the artists who get signed on these labels are actually the ones who produce what I would consider actual interesting listenable / playable trance. Why ? Becaus they are different than everybody else. Their choones are actually interesting to listen to, not just the first time you hear it, but over and over again - you just keep discovering new sounds and new drum loops and synth lines and melodic hooks that you never noticed before. The "normal" commercial trance lacks depth ... I mean, all you have is your kickdrum going throuhgout the track, a synth melody which also stays more or less the same, hihats, one or two buildup / breakdown rollercoasters - and that's it. Same thing every time ... where's the fun in that ? or maybe it's just me ...
