I'm not a genre junkie by any stretch, I really don't care to categorize everything.
But I have to chuckle when I go shopping for new tracks. I play alot of progressive house and techno, and really not alot of the peaktime trance these days. But I find the some great trance in the progressive house section of Beatport.
Here are some examples, I'm curious to hear if you guys agree or not.
Solid State- It's Good for You (I know they produce alot of proggy stuff but this is by no means an example!)
Rick Pier O'Neil- Another World (once again, primarily a prog artist but this is undeniably trance)
and found in the techno section, Hardcell & Grindvik- Salt. Certainly has it's techy sound but come on now!
plus alot of stuff by Brisky and Majitman.
It doesn't really matter to me what you call it, good music is good music. But do you guys think that they put tracks like these in other sections because the artists primarly produce that type of music, or because trance is a dirty word and the tracks wouldn't sell if they were in that section?

Doesn't help for beatport that they deal with works from hundreds of producers, some who like to do multiple genres under same alias. Oh and tunes that are borderline genre skipping. (And how many ppl do they employ to categorize stuff that actually are knowledgeable in EDM?)
Like that Hardcell & Grinvik - Salt. It's got trancey elements, but it's got lots of tech elements too. And Harcell & Grinvik is mainly a techno producer, so off to techno section it goes. |

Well here is what i think .... for past few years we know House has dominated the club scene very much so. And it still does. Now people are starting to get a lil bored of it. Similar was the case with trance back in 2002 and early part of 2003.
Artists are testing newer sounds seeing how it is attracting a fair amount of listeners from both House and Trance side of EDM. House producers are testing Trance elements in their tunes and liking what they hear and what reaction they get from the crowd in clubs because it's sort of a change. Similarly Trance artists are testing House elements in tunes and liking the reaction they get.
Now how Beatport puts these songs in Genres is probably just according to what the artist feels he was aiming for. He may aimed for a house tune, used Trancey bits enjoyed and liked the outcome so now you have a real good Trance tune by a house Dj categorized in House section.
People get bored of one style by same dj all the time real quick. Djs now a days realize that and use different methods and skills to sort of have a change in their sound and i for one totally support it and love it and as you said Dennis bottom line is Good Music is Good Music may it be House Trance or Techno or whatever else. |
