I dont think its telling people how to mix, all it is doing is working out the musical key of each record (something thats been done for years). Up to the individual on how they process the information thats given by the program. |

It seems like they're taking the fun out of DJing...but I don't DJ so I wouldn't know.
But I agree with Dennis...soon we'll have talentless DJs all over the place. Just press a button and it does it all for you. |

A DJ still needs to have a decent trax selection...mixing is just half of the job. Dropping Dj Sammy traxs that are mixed perfect does not make him/her a talented Dj. |

I would love to see a list of DJ's who can actually mix properly or musically correct in key. It's really not as easy as going "this track is in C, let's find another track that's in C"...
But if you can do it right, you've got mad musical ear skills.
Keys and harmonic mixing are more important than most people think. Taken from Paul Oakenfold, regardless of what you think of him, he has a very valid point:

i know...mixing doesnt require much talent anyways...i mean i cant mix that well, if it all, without it sounded like a bunch of running horses but i dont dj much, only for fun...but real "dj" talent is with turntabilists, scratch fx specialists, etc. |

...or Gm or Fm, or a C#m for modulation mixing. But it is not always recognizing if a track is in Cm right on the spot, it is sometimes about- is the next track I'm going to play harmonious or not with the track that is playing. Doesn't take much to recognize at least that much. That can make harmonious mixing a whole lot easier, without having to use any tool.

I don't know squat about dj'ing but I do know something about perfect pitch. I play guitar, have for years, and I know for myself and lots of other players we don't have perfect pitch but we do have relative pitch. If I'm playing an A chord and 5 minutes later listen to something that uses an A I'll recognize the A, or a G based on how far it is from A. Lots of times I've figured out a song I've never heard before by ear as fast as I heard it, that's relative pitch. I think (but don't know for sure) a dj should be able to hone that skill as well as a "regular" musician. |
