US -> Canada Passport Requirements?

I'm heading to North Carolina this Sunday (11th), and flying back to Toronto the following Sunday (18th).
Now, according to the Passport Canada site, the WHTI (Western Hemisphere Travel Initiation) passport requirement for visitors to and from the Americas will NOT be implemented for all air travel to or from Canada until Jan 8, 2007, which is what I thought I had recalled being the situation.
Going to the US State Department Web site, it appears they confirm this information too! (Which is great - what I was hoping to hear!)
My passport has expired years ago, so I am without a valid one at this point. This trip just spontaneously came about this last Saturday passed, and only got confirmed yesterday night. As of last night, though, I have become concerned that maybe a lack of a passport *could* be a potential issue, and time is now short for having a new passport produced by Sunday afternoon when I leave.
The reason I became concerned, is because friends of our family (who are Canadian) I was just informed were not allowed to board their flight from Arizona to Toronto this past summer because they did not have passports. I would have to double check and confirm, but I imagine they of course had their Driver's Licences and Birth Certificates.
I am just somewhat concerned about there being an issue now with flying back.
Can anyone comment who has recently travelled (with a passport) from the US to Canada if they encountered any serious trouble, or if they are aware of any situations?
The last thing I need is to be stranded in North Carolina!
Thanks for any comments and feedback guys.

| Even with an expired passport, Canada Customs can not deny you entry. I don't know about letting you on the flight by US customs. |

Uhm, Monday-Friday afternoon I'll be in the Kinston area... 45mins away from Greenville... like an 1 hour from the coast I think.
Then I'm leaving for Mocksville (by Winston Salem) on Friday and staying there till Sunday whenever my flight out is!
:) God I'd kill you see you girl! :) *hugs* I miss you Sam.
