| Hey guys, I just recieved a used 1200mkII in the mail... the problem is that the stylus it came with isn't "gripping" the vinyl... it just slides to the center of the vinyl... the counter weight and everything is set... but when i compare the actuall needle on my other 1200... it's shorter... there both ortofons... I swapped the stylus and the sound was fine... do i need a new Stylus? |

| Make sure the needle isn't flipped upside down. Happened to me and I had to get a new needle. |

Here's a pic of the needle... it's shorter then my other one, I'm positive about that... I'm a newb though, so best to see what you guys think...

| Looks worn. The part of the needle that sticks out to catch the grooves on the record should be kinda sharp. Not enough to cut you of course, but if you run your finger along it alittle you should feel it catch your skin. |

And honestly, it looks like it is upside down. haha
I know in the picture you purposely have the whole thing upside down to show the needle but I dunno, just looks different. I'll have to check mine out when I go home. |

Ok, thanks for the help... i thought it was worn too.
Another thing now (lol)... The audio cables on the 1200s were bitten by the previous owners cat (don't ask). He used electric tape to cover it up, right channel works fine, left is totally dead. I unwrapped the electrical tape, and there wasn't much "fixing" done. Anyone know the most efficient way to fix this... I have my own methods(involving a lighter), but maybe theres a better way.
Thanks for the help :) much aprecciated.

Ok mate, firstly your needle is rooted if it will constantly side to the center of the vinyl it shouldn't matter what the weight is set to or where the anti-skate is, it will still grip... You will need a new stylus for that.
As for the cable...
You can either strip it back yourself and reconnect all the wires with each other and re-tape it up. I wouldn't recommend this though you are risking damaging the deck further, or if you are confident enough to pull the deck apart and re solder the new cables in yourself.
Just take it to a repair man, considering you admitted your noobness, this is all I can suggest. |

| i got big pants |
| just replace the rca wires yourself...its pretty easy...im horrible when it comes to fixing anything electronic, but just take your time and you'll be good. im sure there are walk-throughs online or even the forums |

Good stuff, thanks for the info. I'll replace the stylus and try to do the cable myself, got a little experience with it. I will tell you if I screw up for sure :nervous:
Cheers. |

i cant really offer any advice on the ortofons, but take em into a store and get expert advice before you purchase a replacement stylus.. most likely its just stuffed tho |
