A YOUNG woman's rooftop suicide bid in Germany sparked a mass brawl between spectators encouraging the 21-year-old to jump and a group of homeless people trying to protect her.

The homeless people were angered when some teenagers in the crowd of hundreds started yelling to the woman she should throw herself from the roof of the town hall of the southwestern town of Loerrach, said police spokesman Dietmar Ernst.

"The homeless people started shouting at the kids not to say that, using some strong language," Mr Ernst said. "Morally speaking though, the homeless people were in the right."

A punch-up involving around 40 people then ensued, during which time police managed to coax the woman back indoors - three and a half hours after her ordeal began.

Some 35 officers, six of whom were injured during the fight, were needed to break it up. Eight participants were arrested, most of them school children aged between 16 and 19.

Mr Ernst said he was doubtful that the brawl, which involved at least one girl, had stopped the woman from jumping.

"She was about 70m up and probably wouldn't have seen much of what was going on," he said.

What possible good could that do to see someone fall to a horrendous death like that? If she wanted jump she would have but to encourage suicide for entertainment value is fuken ridiculous behaviour and quite sick!!

I vaguely remember hearing something in a Psych lecture about people in crowds feeling anonymous and cheering people to their deaths from high buildings.

One guy in New York was even heard to remark "I hope she doesn't fall over the other side, then we'll miss it." :wtf:

AN Indian man died after trying to break the fall of his suicidal father who had leaped from the eighth floor of their apartment building in New Delhi, a newspaper reported today.

Sudhir Chand Garg, 47, died in hospital after trying to catch his father Kailash, the Hindustan Times said.

"His father took the plunge and Sudhir tried catching him. We heard a loud thud and saw the father-son duo lying in a pool of blood," a neighbour was quoted as saying.

Kailash, a 74-year-old retired lecturer, was under psychiatric treatment for depression and had tried to kill himself twice before, the paper said.

Organisers go a joint too far in record bid
From correspondents in Amsterdam
November 23, 2006 09:00am

A PLAN to roll and smoke the world's largest joint was cancelled at short notice in Amsterdam when the organisers realised they could be breaking the law.

"We have now read the small print and realise there could be problems," Thijs Verheij, one of the organisers, was quoted as saying by ANP news agency after consulting Dutch drugs laws.

The group had wanted to roll a 1.5-metre long pure-weed joint, stuffed with 500 grams of marijuana and containing no tobacco, and smoke it in a bar.

It had initially thought the attempt would be legal if 100 people each brought along the five grams of the drug tolerated by Dutch authorities for personal use.

"Unfortunately, it looks like this will not be possible," Verheij said.

A police spokesman said: "We would definitely have investigated this. If you make a single joint with half a kilo of cannabis in it, it would cross the line."

Verheij said the group had hoped to beat a record set with a joint containing 100 grams of marijuana.

hahahaha, come on let em try for record..!
