Politics. It was no secret that "stay the course" was not working (even the administration knew that) and it'll become official once the results of the Iraq Survey Group is released. But getting rid of Rummy before the election would have been an admission of doing something wrong.

Second secretary general who started off the job wielding a lot of influence and used it to resolve a lot of crises during the 50's. He created the UNEF. His successor, U Thant, was also pretty good.

chances are people that are not in the military [or know someone in the military] will not see any difference in your day to day lives.

I think I'm happy not so much that he is being replaced, but more so that Rumsfeld's idiocy will no longer have a say in the direction of this country. Things might not change and Gates may not be much better, but at least I wont have to put up with Rummy's pathetic speeches and press conferences anymore...
