1. Learn at least the very basics of music theory: writing in key, major and minor scales, intervals, chords, progressions.
2. Learn what the settings of a synth do to a sound by reading about the theory of synthesis, reading practical "how to" guides, and most importantly experimenting a bunch with your own synths. Learn about subtractive synthesis first (it's probably the easiest to understand and the most commonly used for trance), and then start in on FM, additive, wavetable, and granular synthesis. The links in the tutorial sticky are a great start.
3. Learn about effects -- distortion, detuning, phasing, reverb, delay, vocoding, panning, EQ -- learn what each of them does to the sound itself, how it sounds to your ears, and how different settings affect them.
4. Listen! As you start to acquire knowledge and skills for production, listen closely to the tracks of your favorite producers and try to figure out what's "going on" in each part, the ways in which many different sounds are brought in or cut out progressively to make a song, and the way those individual sounds change over time. If you think you might know how a certain sound or effect is being made, then try to copy it. This isn't so you can slavishly imitate the "hot sound" of the moment and use it in all of your tracks -- that's dumb. The purpose of it is to give yourself some practical knowledge, one more tool in your "kit" for when you build your own songs. |
