sorry for being a b*tch and not being able to upload a sample but if you head to www.audiojelly.com and search alliance you can find "distant planet (menno de jon interpretation)" and it starts right in the sample... |

i'm interested to see people's suggestions to this. i could give you an FM synthesis solution, but i don't think that would really be much help for vanguard. |

If you have a synth like Vanguard that doesn't do any FM, you can still get a somewhat bell-like sound by using two or three oscillators and tuning one or two of them up by some number of semi-tones.
I made you a patch. It's not exact, but the basic sound is there:

I used five and nine semi-tones (interval of a fourth and a major sixth) for the second and third oscillators of the patch. |
