I think we should replace religious celebrations with religious education.

In as much as the United States (this also applies for Canada as we have the same issue here) professes to believe in the seperation of church and state I believe there should be no reflection of any religion expressed in public schools. The public school system is an institution of the state thus it should not have any religious flavour, teachings, exercises, or holidays. If you want your child to have a christian education complete with celebration of religious holidays then send them to a private christian school.... same be said for any religion.

Note; I am a practicing Roman Catholic, observant of all sacraments and holy days. I understand that should I wish my children to have a religious education it is my responsibility (with the support of my church) and not the responsibility of the state.

that being said moral, would you be so inclined to send your kids to catholic school if the ontario gov stopped funding it? cause it is afterall the only secular school board publicly funded..... thanks to the generosity and wisdom of a mr bob rae....

ps i was raised catholic and thats why i have such a bad taste in my mouth for any form of organized religion..... and even more of a distaste for publicly funded religious shcooling

I do think it's wrong that we (the state) fund on form of religious school but no others in Ontario. Personally, I think that the catholic school boards should be shut down and folded into the public boards, however, I'm in the minority on that. That said, so long as they exist and are funded by my property taxs I intend to send my children there. If they were shut down I would likely send my kids to public school (as I have ideological objections to private schools) and tend to any shortfall I felt existed in their religious education through my parish community.

+1 great response moral.

being raised catholic and by a mother who is a public school educator. i have a pretty bitter disdain for the private school systems and the bull that goes iwth them. the only things a government should be responsible to provide to their citizens free of charge are healthcare and education.

if the catholic school board did fold up however i would miss the slutty girls in pleated skirts i so enjoyed as a highschool student......

This is stupid. The entire thing is ridiculous.

Personally, I think that they should embrace all the different cultures customs. When they are doing crafts and whatnot, instead of just making Christmas trees, teach the children about little Yosef's celebration too, and make Hanukkah menorots or something.

Instead of trying to seperate ourselves from each other, we should try to understand and embrace each other. America and Canada are becoming serious melting pots of thousands of different cultures. If we intend on truly molding together as one in a society, we need to learn to accept that others are different and that they may do things a little differently.

As much as I hate organized religion and would love to see all of it abolished, thinking logically, I cannot forsee that happening for a VERY long time, if ever.

So let's just face facts and accept it, and embrace it instead of trying to sweep it under the rug in a shoddy attempt to be politically correct.

LOL!

Personally, I think all schools should have a mandatory "World Religions" class that teaches about all cultures, and if you choose not to take it, you fail.

The idea of seperating the church and the state is a good one, but not likly to happen. People are religious whether we like it or not, and those religious students subsequently make that school under the influence of religion, regardless of what is ideal.

my school did this
actually, they went overboard
not only did we have like full day celebrations for three kings day and kwanzaa, we had a full day assembely on martin luther king day, EVERY ING YEAR
god i was so sick of hearing how i was white, and therefore i oppressed everyone and everyone should be entitled to as much if not more than me
wasn't even the poor black kids in our school's doing, they hated it as much as i did
just the teachers thinking it was politically correct/mandatory
