hey guys
so mmh just allow myself to ask for suggestions....simple every week i have english classes and some ppl do an oral presentation about some question debates about something more or less related to rights....freedom or law and so far people exposed death penalty ,euthanasia ...abortion..,global warming ,trial of saddam hussein....and mmh im trying to figure out what could interested the class cuz i might have to prepare it pretty soon prolly next week or something.....but mmh sure i would like to speak about something specific but there is no point if no one can actually debate ....so i would like to find something kinda general .....but to be honest the subjects we talked so far about are old news or maybe we spoke too much about it in PDD
so if u guys have any suggestions.....would be much appreciated .....something general that everyone can talk about dont feel like boring the class about the situation in tajikistan or in egypt because it might interests me but no one besides that cares so yeah .....
thanx in advance |

Do it on the 'decriminalization of marijuana' movement in the West.
Like talk about why the governments outlawed it in the first place, then tell them why some people want to decriminalize it. I think it's interesting. |

| What about the block on buying land in Poland? How it is going to be revoked (forced to be) in the next few years and how Germany is going to basicly take it over by money rather than force? Maybe draw it out into the wider context of commitment and pros and cons of the EU? |

Ive just started watching Boston legal (excellent show by the way, if you don't know about it yet try to get your hands on it. I'm mad at myself for not picking it up before) and i got to and interesting episode. Basically a guy protected his house against invaders by running 50.000 volts of electricity trough the fence, some other guy tried to rob him and got shocked so badly that he got paralyzed and sued the man he was trying to rob.
Now there are many urban legends floating around about robber suing because they got hurt during their robbery but i still thought it would make for an interesting discussion about the right of the person to defend himself, his family and his property..
I myself have a slight moral dilemma with this point as i am for giving the homeowner many liberties for protecting his property but i am against guns as i believe that they are dangerous and that the general public is too stupid and/or irresponsible to be in most cases able to use them safely and responsibly. These two points cause me much headache as a gun would be the most effective weapon to fend off a robber (does a homemade flamethrower qualify as a gun? That would certainly get rid of the robber one way or the other though it probably does qualify as a firearm which is what i should have said i am against in the first place probably).
Another discussion point could be just how far one should be allowed to go to protect himself, at what point does overkill begin and at what point do you go from a man defending his property to a vigilante, hunting down the bastard who dared to try to rob you. Perhaps a comparison that shows how different laws effect a persons safety in various countries. I don't know the situation in France, but if i have learned anything from watching too much much TV is that americans are allowed to use anything short of a bazooka to shoot a bad guy with if he dares to rob him, while at the other hand where i live i believe you aren't allowed to even touch the robber even if you see him walking away with your stuff unless he attacks you first. People get pass this law with the "he fell down the stares" argument which because this law is incredibly stupidly written is counted even if the house that was robbed is missing a staircase (at least thats what i am told by the lawyers i know, but i`m not an expert in law so they may just be pulling my leg)
Dont know how long your presentation is supposed to be (i havent raised so many points so this could be a short one), i used to constantly run my mouth off so mine were usually very long. I knew i had the mouth of a lawyer but being an idiot i choose to be a geek instead of opting for a career of big bucks, nice suits and gorgeous female interns (another Boston Legal moment here). I still curse myself sometimes for making that bad decision. |
