A tsunami warning was issued on Wednesday after an earthquake with a magnitude of about 8 rocked the Kuril islands north of Japan.
The tsunami warning was issued for the eastern coast of Japan's northern island, Hokkaido, and stretches down the Pacific coast of the main island to Tokyo.
Officials warn a tsunami could be two metres high and could strike within an hour.
Residents on the sparsely populated Hokkaido island have been urged to head for higher grounds.
Various agencies have reported the quake's magnitude as high as 8.1.
The Kuril islands stretch from the northern tip of Japan to Kamchatka, Russia. They separate the Sea of Okhotsk from the Pacific Ocean.
Russia and Japan both lay claim to the thin chain of islands, which are known in Japanese as the Chijima islands.
The tsunami warning follows an earlier earthquake, which struck at around 6:15 a.m. local time.
