how important is it for kick drums to be the right key? (pg. 2)

Kicks dont have tonal properties (well most of the time) so the pitch of the kick is irrelevant, since it does not have any. Just choose a kick that sounds well with the synths

Kick / Bass Tuning is VITAL..

Not important at all...

The tuning itself isn't important. However pitching the kick affects the frequencies of it, which can help make it "work" better with the bassline sometimes.

I was just reading through an old article with Junkie XL and he also mentions this.
It was posted here before I think, but check it out and especially the last paragraph:

tuning yes

right "key"? no

same thing

No. Non-tonal percussive instruments can be tuned, but they do not have a key.

All I know is when I make my kicks with a sine wave I make it at a particular frequency and therefore note, so a 60hz fundamental is like a2 or something I forget exactly. So its tuned with/against your bass, it doesn't have to be the same note but you can make relationships with the bass and kick like a 3rd or 5th or whatever.

The loudest frequency in a kick at the beginning is around 200 Hz or so and then it drops until at the end it's somewhere from 20 to 80 Hz. At least that's how it's been on the few I've run frequency analysis on.

More than one way to make a kick, though.
