He just wanted to piss people off..its not like it costed him any money...all the money was through "donations" on the internet. People would donate enough money for them to go and buy a PS3 and smash it infront of people waiting to get one.

He made enough money to get a second unit...for free.

People did this when the Xbox 360 game out. They even sold the damaged system on eBay for like $200 i think.
