Hey Man,
Torrents are basically just shared files that are avalible online to be shared between people... There is virtually anything you want, movies music and other stuff. But the legality of what shared its a small issue. You need a torrent downloader client and also a place to search for the torrent files. As a client I personally use utorrent
www.utorrent.com
And to search for the files the best thing to install is the firefox torrent search bar...

this is my understanding of Torrent files.
Basically, I have a demo of Half Life 5 that I just want to unleash on the world. However it's 1 gigabyte big and it's going to take a while for me to upload to 10,000 eager gamers through DC++ or MSN filesharing or whatnot (given i don't have a high-bandwidth server to distribute it with). So, i "announce" by demo through a torrent tracker, an online site dedicated to organization thousands of demos, songs, warez, movies and the like.
Now, 1 minute after i've "announced" my demo on a tracker, JESUSCHRIST goes on TorrentSpy and goes "WOWSA Half Life 5 demo! 1 Seeder. 0 Leechers" and he clicks on the torrent file. Automatically, his torrenting software (favorites like azureus or UTorrent) starts connecting to my computer to start downloading the file.
As of now, there is 1 seeder and 1 leecher. Seeders are people who have the full complete file and are uploading to other users. Leechers are people who are currently download.....AND uploading what they already have!
JESUSCHRIST is probably gonna take a long as time to download my 1 gigabyte demo of Half Life 5. But say that 5 hours later, he has so far downloaded 50% of the demo (500MB). Now, MARYMAGDELINE sees the demo on the tracker and wants to download. Well the beauty lies in that she will be downloading from my full complete file, and the 50% that JESUSCHRIST has so far got. And say DAVID and GOLIATH join the torrent, they can do the same and omg, JESUSCHRIST and MARYMAGDELINE have finished downloading. They have now become seeders and can now dedicate upload status on the Half Life 5 demo. As time goes on and there are more seeders, the downloads just get faster for everyone.
Much of the torrent community is revolved around piracy and warez and all that junk. The only legit sites i've seen use Bit Torrent are 3dgamers.com and Openoffice.org |

I don't see why this thread would need locking.
the thread starter wanted info on torrents and how they work, he has been given a couple of good answers.
So far there has been no mention of any sites that offer illegal downloads in torrent form, the only link so far provided is for addons to firefox to allow torrent searches
No one has even mentioned that he would need a client program to download torretns
so nothing wrong with this thread for it to warrent closing (yet) |

I dont know if i can say this (if I cant delete my post)
But theres a torrent site who offers only NON-commercial EDM things (livesets, video, radioshow) from all EDM-genres...from trance to hip-hop, house, techno, minimal, hardocre etc. I really like this website and you cant download illegal things. The adress is themixingbowl.org |

Still a good call on not locking tho imo, since its pretty much just informing him about how it works. |
