Whoa nostalgia attack! Cheers for the samples ;)
As for what synths they use, I'd imagine they'd use real analog machines back then since virtual analog technology didn't really exist. Probably something like the final range of Roland's synths like the Juno 106 or JX-3P, ones that are MIDI capable (or maybe ones with a MIDI-CV retrofit). |

Definatly heard the famous Yamaha "Latey Bass" in there..
try finding the very rare Roland SR-JV80 expansion board for the XP range of keyboards.. you can also put the card into the JV range of synths and the new fantom.
Otherwise there was a 1RU rack unit version of the card called the OB-1? (maybe? i could be wrong)
I used to have it... it basically had all the best 80-90's dance sounds. |

beast- I used one for many years.
Quite tempted to bid on that one actually.... wouldnt mind revisiting it.
The also did an orchestral version and a bass version too- also based on the expansion cards |

I'll be doing the same when I pick up a fantom in the next month or so.. i think i get 8 card slots.. so at the very least I'll get the old dance and techno cards..
dance one is supposedly a little rarer as it was pulled off the market due to one of the samples on the card was not properly cleared. |

very true- there were a few that were lifted and not cleared, and the card was pulled. plenty got sold before it was pulled though ;)
One of them is that horrible screech sound as heard in Dj Quicksilver- 'Bellisima' (or however the you spell it) - the one you hear on its own for a beat just before the track kicks back in. |

| when i go through the factory presets on my jp, i always hear patches that artists used without even changing any of the parameters. |

| That's fairly common with a lot of artists. Subsky used an unaltered preset from the Virus B on Strawberry Fields that I had just used in a track like a year prior. Hell, if it sounds good and fits in your mix, use 'em, I say. |
