I'm normally pretty good at figuring out how different sounds are made, but this one has me baffled. Does anyone have an idea of how this sound from LSG's "Netherworld" might have been made?:
Sample
It's an awesome sound, I think. :) |

I have thought about this one too and had difficilty. If i remember corrctly the melody is kinda of weird...What seems to be the start of the melody is not on beat 1..Not to say ots wrong but kinda different...Also It uses different gates patterns for the melody....start there...I will listen again later and see if there is anything else....MY FAVORITE track of all time though =) |

sounds like there are three distinct sounds at the beginning of that clip. oliver lieb is one of my heroes hehe...he's such a genius...
but anyway here is what i'm hearing...
sound one sounds like as someone said a detuned triangle with some distortion on it.
sounds like their is also some heavily distorted hi hats in there.
and then the sound at the top of the sample sounds like just a sustained triangle LFO cycling with some phaser or something on it...sounds like a combo triangle and square wave...
i dunno...that's what i hear...tried playing with it real quick and it would definitely take some time to get it right...
edit: also i think it's in A minor for anyone trying to make the sounds... |

There are three sounds in there. You're talking about the electro-ish arped sound, right? It's an FM sound, you should be able to get it if you set up a fundamental as a sine, and 3 or 4 multipliers also as sines. I'm not sure precisely how they're set up here but try starting with one multiplier at a ratio of 1, and the other two at 4-6, and give the fundamental a short decay envelope. Sounds like there might be a bandpass filter on it as well with a fairly high cutoff.
It's definitely not a detuned triangle.
As for the thumping sounds, there are probably a lot of different ways to produce that - I'd just combine a filtered tom and a clap, maybe with a flat bass drum.
The other sound in the midrange and in the second half of each bar, I'm not entirely sure, but it's a heavily filtered something-or-other; I'll bet you could get something similar just by using any thin instrument, playing that melody, and throwing a mid-ranged bandpass on top. |
