I haven't been djing very long, just about a month and a half, and at a house party this weekend a couple of idiots say to me, "We arent high, play something other than techno!" Wow I just wanna shoot people like this sometimes. Would you go to a rock concert and tell the band to play a different style of music? Then don't tell the DJ what kind of music to play!

Actually, yes!

I know you're from Germany, and maybe the way you pronounce DIK like we pronounce DOOK, however I have attached a link to a sample to an introduction of Paul van Dyk, spoken by a German before a set played at a Loveparade pre-party..... in Germany!

So listen to this...... this guy definately says "dook"

Yes, that is exactly why he didn't say it.

Unfortunately we're cursed by the fact that about 95% of the population of the world have no knowledge of the concept of any kind of DJ other than the kind you get doing daytime local radio and weddings. As far as they're concerned it's a completely different situation from going to see a band - you go to see a band because you like what they play, you hire a DJ to tell him what to play.

It's not their fault they don't know anything about it (maybe they're in the wrong place but hey), you've just gotta be pleasant about it and explain that you only play the kind of music you're playing and that's what you've been booked for.

Though I 100% agree with you on this - you've got to admit that we have it 'kinda' lucky in the UK in that people are educated enough to know the difference at least between House, Trance and Rave music. Sure, you'll still get the odd idiot - but in the whole, as far as labelling the music's concerned, I've never really had a problem with people labelling me wrongly as a Rave or Techno DJ.

What's the culture like for this in the States? Are there any DJ magazines there equivalent to MixMag or DJ Mag? Or is it all online stuff? I'd love to check out some of the US stuff, just to see what's getting written about the music.

Anyway, I agree completely that the people who do tell the trance DJ to stop playing 'Techno' should get shot, quickly - but at least in the UK it's not as huge a problem... in my experience...

In terms of mainstream it's just dance or techno. People are fairly narrowminded, even moreso the closer you are to the middle.

It's a bit nicer in Montreal, but I'm sure most of Canada is the same as the US. There is awesome electronic music coming from the US, it's just such a small percentage of the industry. The house scene on the east coast (DC, Baltimore etc) is apparently banging, you have breaks in florida (which are kind stale actually) More deep house, but much different deep house on the west coast out of SF - Chicago and Detroit both still have solid scenes from what I gather, they are just so small in comparison to the entire population it doesn't change much. texas (san antonio for sure) also has a fairly good tech house/prog/ breaks mix of scenes - which is cool and Proton is run out of the US as well I believe.

Sandstorm was one of those tunes whose light shone really bright - and for waaaaay too long (if you ask me). As someone who used to have to 'pay their dues' in the more commercial clubs when that came out - I've got to admit, it hit the spot for the people on the dance floor - but after hearing it 10,000 times on the radio and in clubs, it just got really annoying.

I've got a good mashup of it with OnePhatDiva's "in and out of my life' over it though...
