problems starting up computer

So my computer randomly just freezes up during the Windows XP loading screen. I'm curious as to what's going on because it just randomly started today and the only thing I've done is install Flatout 2. The weird thing is that when I turn my computer back on afterwards and choose 'load from last working configuration' the computer worked and then later on that option wouldn't work either. It loads just fine in safe mode though.
I've tried:
-enabling bootlogging (it told me that everything booted fine)
-uninstalling the game (did nothing)
-searching for starforce drivers to uninstall (it found none)
-downloading the starforce removal program (it found no drivers)
-rolling back my computer settings by a day with no change, then a week and still no change
-searching yahoo for similar problems (no help whatsoever)
The only option left is to re-install windows, which is something I'd rather avoid, at least for now.
Oh I'm using XP Pro with SP2 by the way.
Any ideas? |

My suggestion is to install Windows Vista (OEM Retail - Final) if your gonna re-install Windows. |

That's if his PC can handle it though.
The restore function in XP stinks and has always been unreliable. Check your Direct X configuration to see what the Audio hardware exeleration is wat. I had the same problem when I used GTA: SA and it appears that was the problem according to Rockstar's tech support. Worth a try. U running a legit game/legit OS? That may have osmething to do with it too. |

Howdy.
I work in a company that has a hardware division; based on what we've seen in there, the symptoms you are describing 99% of the time point to a poor or corrupt driver. That's why when you load into safe mode, everything is groovy. Do you recall loading or updating any drivers recently? If you have extra pci cards in your system, you can try taking them out one at a time to see if they are the culprit. I'd try uninstalling your vid card first; video card drivers seem to be the most temperamental of all drivers.
Rolling back your PC back to when it DID work was a great idea; i've had measured success with this strategy...too bad it didn't work, which means an existing driver likely has become corrupt; rolling back won't fix it, because the files are still deemed as 'original.'
All in all, if you have a good backup method, it may be faster to reinstall your PC. We always argue at the shop that often times, it can be faster to reinstall than to discover & correct the problem.
Vista install isn't a bad idea...if your PC can handle it. It has stringent vid/processing requirements based on the new graphically intense GUI. Not a bad o/s from what I've played with so far, though. Kinda crazy with the security settings at times. |

how do u get a cd key for that? |

| Format is always faster, that's if you're setup for it. Having multiple drives is key, toast the o/s drive, back in action. |

Even if you get a CD key for that, your going to fack yourself over in the end. Once you have to start updating stuff with Vista and other things, and have to verify your system, then your going to have lots of fun running into problems and not being able to. Just wait and actually buy Vista yourself instead of getting a fake CD key.
You may be fine at first, but eventually your going to hit a brick wall and won't be able to go anymore. |

Try this..
Start -> Run -> msconfig -> startup -> disable all -> reboot
If it doesn't solve the problem, drivers issue. If it does, enable your startup processes one by one to see which is defective.
If I'm not mistaking, boot logging only logs drivers, not processes.
But then again here's your chance to install a real OS... among the lines of Linux or BSD :) |
