Some simple questions I dont know the answers to:
What's the difference between a kick drum and a bass drum? Where do you find the kick drums in Reason?
What are the typical percussion patterns used in tracked - where do the hi-hats usually occur etc? |

bd and kick are same thing. highhat goes exactly inbetween the two kicks, on the offbeat |

not necessarily. there are many different ways to variate your hats. also you have open hats and closed hats. on generic trance music you might hear the open hat hit on the offbeat. there are tutorials in here which can help you with percussion placement.
kickdrums in reason are in the redrum pack if i remember correctly. although id recommend you download free samples or invest in a kick drum pack as the built in ones are . |

If you register at the Thrillseekers Board, Don Jackson (Headstrong) and Steve Helstrip (Thrillseekers) have both uploaded some nice drum sounds that you can download for free. Those should give you a good start. |

Thanks for the help. But I have a few more questions:
What's the difference between closed and open Hi-Hats?
I was looking on a TA tutorial and found this pattern:
X---X---X---X--- Kick
--X--X----X--X-- Bass.
To create it, am I right in thinking it requires two identical Bass Drum samples - but in different pattens (i.e. not two different drum samples)?
Do most people who produce music on here use toms or/and claps? |

Open hi-hat:

Closed hi-hat:

In drumming, there is a pedal which you hold down to open/close the hi-hats. A closed hi-hat makes a quick "tik", whereas an open hi-hat makes a longer "taaaash", more reminiscent of a cymbal crash.

That is probably referring to the bassLINE, not a bass DRUM. Such as a synth which is playing notes in the lower end of the audio spectrum. |
