she's still deciding about the epidural
if she's like, halfway done and can't take it, can they start it then? |

Of course it is, until the it reaches the shoulders... in which case, if the shoulders are too broad, the doctor has no choice but to cut the skin/tissue between the vagina and anus to make more room. |
or they can just let you rip, like i did, 4-5 times. It took them half an hour to sew me up afterwards and then i was so swollen i couldn't pee so they had to cram a catheder up there with all my stitches.. |

| it depends, if she decides to late (judging by her dialation) then they probably won't give it to her because it won't kick in until after she pushes her out. Everyone has their own opinion but from someone who just did it 6 months ago i STRONGLY recomend it. I told the delivery guy that my doctor said i needed an epideral when i was 4 cm dialated. People told me not to because i might be too drowsy afterwards and i won't enjoy the baby and all this other bull. NEWSFLASH!! i was on morphine anyway and i was fine after the labour. With the epideral i didn't feel anything while i was pushing her out... or after when they stitched me. Even when i was pushing the doctor asked "do you want to take a break" i said "no, i want to keep my stick on the ice!" so i pushed her out in under an hour. I hope your wife makes the right choice because i heard heaps of screeming from the other rooms. |

The one thing about epidural, MAKE SURE THE DOCTOR KNOWS WHAT HE/SHE IS DOING! Although it makes things alot easier, it can you for life if they go too far with the needle.
Epidural takes a few mins to kick in, so they probably wont give it to her mid-birth. |

| yeah, they insert a iv in your back in between your vertabrae so it's kind of a big deal. They might make you sign a waiver (i don't remember i was pretty wasted) and they will warn you of the risk, but it's a pretty small risk of paralisys. |
