Mine crashed a month ago. I lost everything I had! The HD is messed up. I even tried to re-format it but it won't let me!
Anyone have an ideas what I can do? or Do i need to get a new HD? Everytime I put in the backup CDs, i can hear the HD spinning pretty hard.
Luckily I bought a new Laptop 2 weeks before so I transfered most things over, but not all!
But my laptop has crashed on me 3 times earlier, and it was due to a bug in SP2 where windows would load properly, it would keep restarting every 30 seconds, so I was forced to format.
I've lost so many pictures over the years :(
Oh well, what can you do. |

hell no.
just don't touch that drive, don't do anything on it before using GetBackData.
you will get all your stuff in a couple of hours.
Ask Cale to get from his pirates sources:p |

if its under warranty send it to the company, if not, just throw it in the garbage, its useless. |

| Not enough details to diagnose the hard drive problem, like Malek said. Sam did make a good suggestion that has saved me and others. Find another identical working hard drive, right down to the specifica model, and find a used one on tor.forsale.computers or craigslist. You can replace the enclosure, however depending on if there was any rattling beforehand, you may just need to swap the circuit board on the HD, which is a lot easier. |

| Store your photos with an online photo hoster and then you can avoid this type of disappointment. |

Yeah, its a 4 year old PC. No warranty. I was hoping there was something I could to make it work. It still runs decently. It was a top of the line Laptop ... 4 years ago haha.
But I wouldn't mind using just for random stuff. I bought a Mac and would like to have windows or something (I am debating whether or not to virtually run windows on my Mac)... |

Get Hiren's Boot CD from one of the links here
In a perfect world before you do any of the stuff below you would have a spare empty hard drive and you'duse Norton Ghost to do a sector-sector copy (with ignore-errors checked)
From the way I understand it - you're not looking to 'undelete' anything (since nothing was deleted) - but more so the boot record and/or Master File Table is messed up and you can't get to the files that are actually still there.
Key utils to try from that boot CD above:
HDAT2 4.5.2
main function is testing and repair (regenerates) bad sectors for detected devices
^^ works miracles, I've brought things back from bad sector grave with this - even if it took 5 days to run. :)
HDD Regenerator 1.51
to recover a bad hard drive
^worth a shot too
After doing that, try booting from the XP CD into the Windows Recovery Console to see if it can even see the XP installation will be worth your while - especially if you had any of the messages as seen here |
