Hey Keryn, depends on what you need it for? I'm guessing an all around camera thats compact enough to bring places. I don't have any hands on recommendation but I'd say go for something that is hard drive based. You should be able to find some relatively cheap, and stick to the name brands.

Yeah definitely with a hard drive...I'm thinking about this one: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...d=1149206842361

I got a MiniDV Camcorder over 200 bucks at Walmart, There very reliable and the video quality on those is awesome. The one I have is the Panasonic PV-GS29 MiniDV Camcorder, Check it out right here. It was only $279.99, But I believe it got marked down to $268.76 now.

Defintely go for the JVC Everio over the Sony. 32x optical zoom vs 20x, built in led light vs no light, MUCH faster transfer rate on USB 2.0 vs. much slower transfer rate on Sony. Also, auto-shut off feature on JVC shuts down camera in free fall so the HD needle stops spining to minimize damage. Go JVC! :)

^^how much does that usually run?

i'm in the market for a camcorder too but something portable to bring to the mountains so i can record some snowboarding tricks. i was looking at the new samsung with helmet cam attachment but i heard it had horrible g-shock protection because when you're riding its hard to keep the camera stable.

Not sure about the Samsung, but the Everios run as low as 400 and as high as 600 depending on the different models. Sometimes you can find a sale even lower. We sold them for black friday at 379.

you need to define your budget and your uses

I have done plenty of filming on low to pro grade equipment and I know the material fairly well.

Also taking into account how cheap 3CCD cameras are getting you could consider going a little higher around 600+ dollars for one.

most built-in lights tend to be worthless so that's barely something to look for when purchasing a video camera.

If you are planning on doing some serious nightime filming you should consider getting an external camera light.

They vary in pricing from 50 bucks to hundreds and hundreds... and you can get models that are powered either by the cameras own hotshoe or a separate battery.

These are LED based and appear to have horrid color temperatures and extremely poor light spread ... not recommended
