OK WTF.. I'm a pretty easy going guy.. but this just made me mad. Children's aid is suppost to AID CHILDREN for gods sake.. Executives getting SUV's?!? 1Billion misspent. You know i'm pro- social network, social welfare, etc etc.. but when it's mismanaged like this it serously pisses me off. I'm having a hell of a time paying back my student loans becuase of all the taxes i'm paying.. I'm accrueing INTEREST on these loans while my tax dollars go to some a$$holes new SUV. Holy crap i'm mad.

Ontario's auditor general has found stunning evidence of improper spending at children's aid societies, CBC News has learned.
CBC News has obtained a final draft of the province's first value for money audit of children's aid societies. The report looks at four of Ontario's biggest agencies, those in Toronto, York, Peel and Thunder Bay.
Calls were made to agencies in Toronto and Thunder Bay as well as the Ontario Association of the Children's Aid Societies, but no one would comment on the report before its official release next week.
The audit details the lack of controls on more than $1 billion in taxpayers' money that Ontario's children's aid societies spend every year.
The auditor's report contains disturbing details of allegedly misspent money.
For example, several executives were apparently given luxury vehicles — including two SUVs worth more than $50,000.

An employee had a staff car, but was also allegedly given $600 per month for the use of their own vehicle.
Numerous meals for child welfare staff at high-end restaurants were expensed, with no explanation.
The auditor also questions expensive trips to the Caribbean, China and Buenos Aires.
Auditor questions funding
Other findings allege the societies aren't following the law to protect children.
In one-third of cases reviewed, initial visits to children at risk were late by an average of three weeks. Some children weren't seen at all.
In the report, the auditor asks why government funding for Ontario's children's aid societies has more than doubled over six years, while the number of families served increased by 40 per cent.
Retired homicide detective Michael Davis says the report makes him angry and disappointed. He's reviewed the deaths of hundreds of children who died while in the care of children's aid societies.
"I think the public is going to be outraged when they hear this," said Davis. "When they look at these perks being used by children's aid societies."

pfft...lurker! :p
I'm a bit torn. I guess the counter argument is that they have to remain competitive with private sector compensation packages in order to lure in 'quality' people.
I dunno...the 1 billion figure is disturbing though. I'd be fine with execs receiving what they do if the rest of the organization is being properly run! |

:thepirate Hey Mark! how u doin? Yea... i've kind of grown out of it a bit.. anyways I saw the article and thought of Jayx's rants.. SO here I am making one of my own!!
I'm just so disturbed at how Children's Aid society is so mismanaged. I'm sitting here, working.. feeling good that that eventhough i'm paying lots of tax it's going to a good cause. I would have not a single issue with paying taxes when it's actually going to good use! But then I see this and it just makes me think, well what's the point? Why am I paying so much when all this is occuring?
I worked for the federal government for a time a while ago, and I kid you not I saw that most of my co-workers were spending their days playing Yahoo Scrabble. These were workers whom worked for the federal government for over 25yrs+ ! I'm just so annoyed now by the entire system of it. |

OACAS is one of my biggest clients... I've saved them a whopping $200 per month on communications spending and will be doing the same for all 33 CAS's... that should help offset the 1 billion.
My contributing to the kids.... :haha: |

I don't think so.
I did consulting for one of the CAS offices in Ontario a few years ago and worked closely with the director of finance there. I got the impression that the type of "business person" that goes to work at CAS understands that the benefits are not competitive with the for profit sector. They are working there because it is a cause they feel strongly about.
I am personally very surprised at the Auditor's findings, and it is frustrating to hear about such lofty expenditures at the senior level when I saw first hand how underfunded the activities on the ground level were.
I still hold CAS in extremely high regard though - there are mistakes and bad apples in every organization. |

this is why i feel that LESS government is better.
The less money the government has from me, the less chance it has to waste it time and time again.
As for children's aid, here is an organization that will take children away from fathers based only on his estranged wife's claim that he abuses them, and then put them back with the mother when she is a known (proven in court) drug abuser and petty thief.
This is precisely what happened to a friend of mine. Sexist? you bet.
That organization needs to be restructured from the ground up. |

fair enough...I'm sure they expect to receive less.
my sister works for them, fresh out of college a couple of years ago...I hear about the so-called tight purse strings (she remains on contract, despite doing the work of a FT perm. employee). She could take a FT position elsewhere, possibly for more money, but loves her work and knows it's a good place to be.
It's sad to think that if indeed it was a charitable org., rather than a gov't org., it would probably be much more efficiently run

One case does not represent the entire agency. |
