Interesting result to this study, it surprised me as far as the outcome.

It turns out that this idea that liberals give more…is a myth. Of the top 25 states where people give an above average percent of their income, 24 were red states in the last presidential election.

Arthur Brooks, the author of "Who Really Cares," says that "when you look at the data, it turns out the conservatives give about 30 percent more." He adds, "And incidentally, conservative-headed families make slightly less money."

And he says the differences in giving goes beyond money, pointing out that conservatives are 18 percent more likely to donate blood.

Other interesting tidbits:

quote:
...while the rich do give more in overall dollars, according to the Social Capital Community Benchmark Survey, people at the lower end of the income scale give almost 30 percent more of their income.

quote:
...the single biggest predictor of whether someone will be charitable is their religious participation.

Religious people are more likely to give to charity, and when they give, they give more money: four times as much.

Giving an offering at church isn't charity, but it is to our government.

They aren't talking about putting money in the collection plate. They're talking about church goers who give to charities outside of church.

It's all about the Karma....I thought tree-huggers and hippies would be more in tune with that...the irony ;) :p

How is that so? The church I used to go to gave 50% to a different organisation every week. The rest was for church mantainance and Father's big screen TV.

In this case they aren't counting money given indirectly to charities by being given to a church first, then to other organizations.

I do agree that churches do tend to donate their money to charities, it's just the way this study is looking at charitable donations.

Reminds me of the 2000 elections when it came out that Al Gore had donated something like $500 to charity in 1999.

That's what I would have expected. What is this "myth"?

There were two supposed "myths."

1. Liberals donate more to charity than conservatives.

--------Conservatives donate 30% more than liberals.

2. The rich donate more than the poor.

--------The poor donate a higher percentage of their income than the rich.

Right, but who got the idea that liberals donate more in the first place?

Er, donating "more" and donating a "higher percentage of [one's] income" are two different things. This hardly seems to be refuting the supposed myth.

Liberals gotta donate to the DNC and Democrats... so we could get back Congress, and now the Presidency in 08... we got no time for Charity...
