upgrade your ram you could get 2 gigs for around £150.
i upgraded mine to a gig recently and i dont have cpu problems anymore. |

| i'd say keep saving and buy somthing that will keep you going in the long run rather than somthing that will only help you out in the short term...so shoot for around 800-1000usd? that's what i would say. |

What would you say is your main source of audio: Samples or virtual synths? (or do you use any hardware boxes?)
If virtual synths and effects are what's killing your computer, a new CPU is what you need. If samples are your thing, more memory.
If I had to build as budget computer that would be good for audio, here's a list of things I'd get (note, this might actually surpass your 250 pound limit, but not by much... prices are in USD from newegg.com)
142$ - AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (Socket AM2)
52$ - MSI K9VGM-V Socket AM2 VIA K8M890 Micro ATX (motherboard)
~40$ - GeForce 6200 w. passive cooling (no fan noise)
98$ - SUPER TALENT 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 (667mhz)
~10$ - CPU fan
Depending on whether you can use parts from your old computer or not, you may or may not need to buy a hard drive, CD-rom and a power supply.
The system you have here is actually quite powerful, built with modern parts (no obsolete technology). it should give you roughly 2-3 times better performance with VST instruments and effects than your previous pentium 4 (I upgraded from P4 2.4ghz to Intel Core2Duo E6600 and saw a 5x increase in the number of VSTs I could handle :)) |
