It was a very important holiday in the 19th Century and into the 1950s when this country was still proud of its British ancestry. Victoria Day weekend has come to symbolise that part of our history and to say it's not an important holiday would be ignorant.
But what has happened to Victoria Day Weekend will surely happen to Remembrance Day in a few decades if it's made a statutory holiday. |
I'm a monarchist and I still think Victoria Day is stupid. |

I've had it off for the last 7 years.
And tbh, what did I do this Remembrance Day? I slept all day from being at CoZo too long the night before. :o |

Despite all the hubaloo the Parliament makes about supporting the troops and supporting the vets and whatnot, Remembrance Day is still not a national holiday.
Yet we have holidays like Civic Holiday, or Victoria Day which serves no purpose other than a day off to get drunk.
Let's petition for a holiday that is worth a good reason :) |
I work for a bank, so it is a holiday for me :p |

That's true. And I don't think I know any institution that doesn't have rememberance day off and doesn't have some sort of ceremony. I think that that's better...for instance, schools always have rememberance day ceremonies. If those kids just had the day off, chances are most of them wouldn't have their own moment of silence. I think the ceremonies are a good way at honouring those that were lost.
Also, at work and schools these ceremonies are manadatory. If people were given the day off and a public ceremony was held...half of those people probably wouldn't show up. |

Then there are other workplaces that don't give their employees even a half day off so that they can attend ceremonies.
Apparently the number of people attending remembrance day ceremonies are increasing yearly. (Though mostly adults and older folks) |

That shows just how grateful Canadians are these days, remember that if it wasnt for Canadians you wouldnt be moving to Holland you'd be moving to a suburb of Berlin:p |

I'm also a monarchist and an Anglophile but I dont' think it's stupid at all. We need a holiday in May anyway and at least it's historically relevant. Canadians always bemoan the fact that we don't have any history, when, in fact, we certainly do.
Anyway, I'm like most people on Victoria Day Weekend. I party or go away somewhere. I dont' sit at home singing God Save the Queen. But I wouldn't want what's happened to V. Day also happen to Remembrance Day even though it's slowly losing its relevance as the veterans die off and the years go by. I doubt even 1/3 of people bother to wear a poppy anymore. Quite sad really. |

That I think is terrible. I'm not really familiar with workplace ceremonies or public ceremonies for rememberence day - if there are any.
I just know there are some in all schools (at least I believe there are). I think that's important for children. Especially b/c you have mentioned that attendance has been increasing - but for the older generations. |

Or just resent being forced to attend a ceremony that they do not care about every year. |

There's no way I can win with you is there Yohan! Hahaha
I dunno...I think most kids care. Or maybe it was just me? I have much respect for the kind of stuff. It's good that they're at least educated about it too. |

For those of us that actually take a day off though to go to remembrance day ceremonies, I would LOVE to not have to take one of my holiday days when going to a ceremony everyone should be going to. |
