Reverse snare/Cymbal (chicane style)

Ok, I've searched ages and I haven't found anything so: does anyone know how to get a reverse snare sound (hopefully like Chicane's) and how to get it on the beat. even if someone knows how to get a reverse cymbal then I an probably go and apply it to the snare so that'll be half my work done from the start. I'm using battery and ableton live BTW if it makes any difference...

Thanks for any help,
Kit

That reverse snare sounds about the same as the snare. Just reverse the snare you have. And if you don't have the same sound, then your snare is just not the snare Chicane uses, which is fine; you don't want to sound exactly like him.

There's alot more going on there than just a reversed snare. The snare is reversed and then chopped to make that choppy sound. It also sounds like they were layering the original snare sound on top of the chopped up reversed sample. It's really neat but I'd imagine it's alot of work.

If the reverse snare I think you mean is the one in the background - it is actually just a reverse clap IMO - the effects on the rest of the percussion just mask it, and it all sounds very complicated when I dont think it is.

Just try reversing a clap, then putting it behind the rest of your percussion track.

All good info, thanks, does anyone know how to get the loud part of the reversed **** (whatever the hell it is) on the beat? I'm finding that it has the decay part first and then the actual "hit" is off beat because its not at the beginning! Can you compensate for this somehow?

Btw what makes you say its a cut up snare 4am? I can't really hear why it would be necessary But I think maybe he's cut any release off the (foward) snare in the envelope and left it on for the reverse one. Also sounds like he has a flanged snare at around 18 secs... does this sound right? It sounds like just the three snares and the kick to me, but played in a really interesting way. Please Let me know if I'm missing anything, I really wanna crack how he does this stuff!

i bet he did it in audio tracks, its more accurate and faster than using a vst sampler

He either chopped or layered them because of how they stutter sometimes. It reminds me of the effect I get in FL Studio when I chop an audio file using the 'stutter' preset.

I think you're confusing the actual reversed snare with the stuttering. The first sound is a stuttering crescendo with a lot of flanger effects and such. After that there are a lot of instances of reversed sounds that have the same tamber of the snare's tail. Not many effects except those already applied to the snare.

I can see why you say its a stutter, esp. at the beginning of the track, but I still think its probably just a flanger being thrown on, it just seems that way to me. But on the other hands its a very stuttery base snare sound, I think he's really gotten into the envelopes there.
Listening more closely I think there might be four snares there too, one short flanged one long flanged one reversed and one normal.

I've found all this really helpful so thanks a lot everyone, I think I can work out how to do the stuff in audio too (rather than by vst) so will give that a go in combination with some of the other stuff and see what I can get!
