The Klipsch ProMedia 2.1's are decent. My roommate has them.
Only get 5.1 if you:
a. have a card that supports it
b. will actually be playing things that were recorded/mixed in 5.1 (movie DVDs, more recent games, etc.) If you're just listening to mp3s (typically recorded in stereo), then there really isn't a compelling reason to go 5.1. |

Do you have a good sound card as well? I think if you have a crappy card it won't sound good anyway.
Also, don't go Bose, they're not that great. They recently came out with new ones, but I haven't tried those.
Look at Klipsch, Boston, Polk?, Harmon Kardon.
The ones mentioned look pretty good. |
