I'd like to know why it's stupid? It's one thing saying trance sucks, it's another adding a reason & therefore rendering it a useful criticism.
Lets look at trance in the "uplifting/epic" style. You mention how you like todays more than what was about in 1998/9. Well that's fine, that's your personal preference, but what I (and many other veterans) feel is that trance has lost a lot, and here's why.
Melody. Nowadays you can add whatever the hell you want to trance, it's basic success relies on a good melody. If the trance of today is so good, why is every other song a remake of one of the ones from the era you didn't like so much? The success back then simply relied on a good melody because there weren't 2000 effects you could add to try & make it sound better, if the melody sucked, the track wouldn't succeed because no amount of clever tricks would make it up. Trance was successful going back to the early 90s on just a few things. good melody, good bassline, basic percussion.

Good point, Ian. I have to agree with you here. I made a post about older Trance music in the music discussion as well stating:

Trance back then had more:
* Inventive, hypnotic, simple drum patterns,
* Effective yet simple intro riffs,
* Breakdowns which were actually useful in the way that it really helped build the track,
* Better/More sound effects 'running' through the track,
* Basslines which were inventive, or synth-wise, good sounding enough that it didn't need 2 basslines on top of each other like nowadays,
* Better/original melodies, in the way that they also were simple, yet effective (like Klea - Tic Toc, no matter how much people consider this to be cheese) and often so repetitive or well composed that they could be described as 'hypnotical'. Some melodies in new tracks sound so randomly written to me, that I do NOT even consider them to be a melody. They're just a bunch of randomly chosen notes.
* Atmosphere in the track itself. Listen to Humate - Love Stimulation for example.
Furthermore, Trance back then sounded not so overly 'clean' and 'clinical'. Sure, the final mix-down of a track is important, but don't exaggerate it. For instance, sharp and heavy open hi-hats were normal back then. And the last thing: most of it nowadays is so uninspired, so unoriginal. There used to be tracks like High-Tech - Let There Be Light and The Trance Setters - The Saga Continues. Sure these tracks were not very uplifting, but damn where they effective. True dancefloor killers. Where are tunes like those nowadays? Almost all techy stuff nowadays is over exaggerated.
Ofcourse not everything nowadays is rubbish, but *IMO* Trance sounded more interesting back then. That's how *I* think about it. |
That's how I feel about it anyway. |

Not quite sure how that is supposed to work. |
I think it is the mashup he played during ASOT 225. |

Why don't YOU stop whining everytime someone criticises something. There's more to trance music than "asot"trance (just to give it a name alright). I guess you like this kind of trancemusic 'cause it's exactly what you produce, some of us like other trancy subgenres, but I take it you just don't know better.
I'd like to think that "producers" who are active in the trance scene would actually be mature enough to use their braincells properly instead of being a little narrow-minded?.
Every now and then this forum looks like EMO addict, with producers and fans whining about the fact some people may criticise the music others do like?
cheers

Me too.
One of my favourite tracks this year is 4 Strings - Mainline, simply because every element has its place in the production, it doesn't need to rely on any productional tricks to make it sound "better" or more interesting, to meet what seems to be today's requirements for melodic trance. Mainline sounds great in a club as well, what cannot be said about a lot of these overproduced tracks that do not have a main hook. All you can hear on a big system is the kick, the bassline and some random filtering on top, which is rather boring to be honest. |

Some of us joined this site almost 6 years ago when trance music was still tolerably original.
There comes a point when posting on a website like this becomes more about the community of members and less about the music
which lead you here. Should we just leave because our taste has changed? |

Yeah, it might be artists you know nothing about but when there's so many people pleased with the simplest stuff, you're never going to find the good stuff. |

| i already found the good stuff, and a lot is on this asot yearmix! I do agree that 50 tunes would have done the trick as well. |

by 'good' stuff you mean simplest, less inspired. Digital labels are on the whole a cancer on the music we love, and the majority of this is a cancer on our poor ears. I bet you've never even listened to anything on the albums any of the 'haters' recommend. |

Even though im honoured my tune is on it i didnt expect it and i actually do not think it is one of THE trance tunes of the year, even though its nice. Same for some more tunes on this album. On the other hand... Ellipse might be one of the few tunes that people didnt expect to be on it  because the tracklist is quite predictable |
